Sony PlayStation Network woos gamers back with free games and movies

Sony has revealed how it plans to woo gamers back, as the beleaguered tech giant tries to rekindle the love affair between gamers and the hacked PlayStation Network. Sony has now revealed the package of free games offered to UK gamers, including LittleBigPlanet, inFamous and Killzone Liberation

The Sony Online Entertainment, PlayStation Network, and Qriocity online gaming and media services packed a bag and went to their mothers' places to get their heads together almost exactly a month ago. The services have recently been restored, and Sony is now promising users free films, free game downloads and extended subscriptions by way of making up. The company will also big you up to that looker you've had your eye on lately.

Gamers can download two free games. PlayStation 3 owners can choose from Dead Nation, inFamous, LittleBigPlanet, Super Stardust HD, Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty and Wipeout HD Fury. US users can choose Super Stardust HD instead of questing for booty. Sony PSP Go owners can choose from LittleBigPlanetModNation Racers and Pursuit Force or Killzone Liberation; the latter isn't offered to US PSPers.

PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive 60 days of free membership to the premium level of the PSN, and non-subscribers will receive 30 free days. Music Unlimited subscribers get 30 days free subscription.

Sony has also said that it's updated the PSN and added additional software-monitoring, vulnerability-testing, encryption and firewall features, so you can feel safe at night and don't have to go back to your ex -- Xbox, that is.

We done a poll over the weekend, asking if you would stand by your console. It seems most of you will be getting back together with Sony, although many of you will take some wooing. That's it, chaps and chapettes -- play hard to get.

Only a small proportion of you plan to switch to the Xbox 360, an option that was discussed by many. Don't worry about making that threat, though -- you were angry, we were angry and things got said in the heat of the moment. We understand.

The PlayStation Network is back online -- here's how to get online again -- but many of you are still having problems. You need to update your PS3 and change your password, and the vast numbers of people doing so has overwhelmed the network, leaving many still frozen out. We can only suggest you be patient -- annoying, we know -- and don't be tempted to hit the 'Forgot your password?' button too many times, as it could lock you out and will probably delay the password email reaching you.

If there's still a problem, give your PS3 some space and let it remember why it needs you. If this thing's gonna work, it's gonna take a little patience and a little work, so hang in there. And it wouldn't kill you to buy flowers every once in a while.

Let us know in the comments section below how you're getting on, and which games you'd like to get as part of your compensation. And remember, we're rooting for you -- you make such a great couple.

So, Sony allows user personal info and credit card info to be stolen and thinks a couple of free outdated games will make users happy? I think after all the hassles Sony has caused their users that they could do much better than a small token gesture in hopes that we'll forget that we were also hacked. I do believe a few hundred thousand law suits are in order from those who lost out because of Sony's inadequate protections of it's customers.

Anonymous. You are so bloody selfish. I do agree that a credit in your account would have been better but at least they are making some sort of a gesture.

infamous and little big planet would be nice, but still besides the point im quite annoyed coz sometimes ps home really muck up on me alot now and make people look kinda warped, but yeh i think youve done a good job sony and hav made a great welcome back gift for us. PLAYSTION RULES THE GAMING INDUSTRY.

Whats wrong with you people? You should be grateful that they are giving away anything at all! The amount of peple moaning over this is stupid.. why are you all so angry? Because you have to talk to your 'friends' faces and go out into the sunshine? Seriously, be happy that your getting 2 FREE games and shut up. Its not like your going to sell your ps3 (because no-one will buy it) and get an xbox, and you cant afford to buy one outright because you dont have jobs because you waste your lives gamming online all day!

PLAYSTATION ALL THE WAY!!!

what alot of ppl 4get is that there are over 70 million accounts worldwide and alot or maybe all our info is up for grabs . E-mails and credit information !! It may not be a problem now but whos to say that in the near future this wont be a problem ? If it does happen what would you do? Would sony help you out or would they say that by giving you the free games ( last years wannabes ) you have already been compensated to some degree .

I'd like 'Smash Cars'. I already paid to download it a while ago when it was on offer at £6.99 but I had a problem when I re-organised my accounts and am now locked out of the game. The price is now back to £11.99 and I don't wish to pay for it twice. My children are now back to playing the demo version and so disappointed. I go online every day looking to see if it's on offer again so I can (reluctantly) pay to download it once again. grrrr.

Personally I agree with Anon on 17th at 2308. However, I think Sony should have bought most of you English and Social studies lessons. Most of the spelling and grammar on here is quite frankly a disgrace and a perfect example of how people are becoming even lazier.
If you are that bothered by any of this, phone your banks and get new credit cards and change your email address - it's not like many of you will get anything important ever sent to your accounts anyway. I bet most people's computers are not that secure anyway.
At least Sony are making an effort. So if you are really annoyed switch to XBox 360. I'll be looking on EBay for cheap PS3s while selling my XBox at 3 times it value. Brilliant.
Oh one more thing - how many of you ventured outside, maybe got sunburnt? Maybe Sony should be giving away after sun.

To all you people slating other people for complaining about having their details stolen you obviously don't understand the situation, yes sony have offered 2 games (outdated games if you don't already own them theres a reason for that and that is they are rubbish games) and also 1 years identity protection but what happens when 2-3 years from now you find out your identity has been stolen and you are now £100,000 in debt, the debt collector has taken your new car, tv, Xbox (hee hee) do you really think sony will fit the bill to clear your name etc. I very much doubt it. I think sony should at the least offer to cover all the people involved with life cover for identity protection as this is the major issue in this case because the people who have stolen the info will know not to steal somebodys identity for at least the first year. As for the games i appreciate the offer but i wouldn't play any of the games on offer and i presume alot of other people feel the same way, I won't be downloading any of the games and i doubt the majority of psn users will either and sony know this thats why they have offered these games so to save themselves money! I think they should offer the choice of any game or credit peoples accounts with the value for 1 top game to spend as they please...........

Am pleased about infamous and dead nation but the others dont really focus on the teenage and older gamers, they are more attractive to younger kids especially ratchet and clank

Anonymous 24 May, 2011 15:52

C'mon people... let's have a reality check on this one!

If 70 million people have been affected then giving away ten or twenty pound vouchers would cost Sony £700 million or £1.4 billion, respectively. As for giving away "a top game".... jeez!

Sony made a net loss last year and if you really want to bankrupt them, then hey, you'll be left with a nice shiny ornament next to your TV with no PS Network.

Just suck it up for the corporate boys on this one I'm afraid.

However, I do agree that IF someone's details are used fraudulently - and it can be linked back to Sony - then they do have a social responsibility to provide sufficient compensation. The Banks should not have to pay for it as that would then affect everyone of us (by the Banks then putting their charges up).

Congrats to Sony on not bowing to pressure and re-launching when the security aspect has actually been sorted.

On another note, does anyone actually know who hacked into the Playstation Network??! Rogue hackers... Microsoft.... Al Qaeda??!

GODDAMMIT, Sony cannot give 80 Million people worldwide £40!!! That is a ridiculous thought, My god they have said they were sorry, and given a choice of FREE games. Just accept the gesture, None of you have been harmed in anyway when PSN was down, So don't need any "Compensation". If anything it would have done everyone good to do some other stuff, like get a new hobby or go outside.

i Think they should give every one 10 or 15 pound to buy what we want then i would forgive sony all i want to but are gold packs on ultimate team

Oh brilliant, I already have wipeout HD, Infamous and dead nation. I don't want kiddies games like Little big planet or ratchet and clank. I am already a Playstation plus subscriber,so 2months free, which works out at £6.66, is an INSULT to a gamer who has supported Sony since the psone.
Unless sony sort this out its goodbye from me!!

To all the people on here claiming sony cannot give 80 million people one year subs to playstation+, please research more and stop supporting large corporations who let their loyal customers down. There are not 80million playstation users, there are 80 million accounts. As many of us have more than one account. One European, one Japanese and one U.S.. In fact there are about 25 million playstation users.
Jeez!

To all you Sony lovers whom have no idea about ID fraud. Wake up and stop being so naive. Free games? be happy? what a load of crap. I dont care for all freebies, all I hoped for was a decent ID protection program. But that aint gonna happen. Sony offer me free ID protection via a company called Affinity, which takes me through to a company named Fraudprotect whom offer free 12 months anyhow? Not only that, Fraudprotect opperate through 3rd party affiliates, so my details are shared even further. Theres no mention of what happens to my details after 12 months, and who monitors all the affiliates? The Fraudprotect sales brochure is something I could make up within 24hrs and exactly what are they offering? Have a good read of the T&C's because as far as I can tell the only tool is the creditt card sweep but theres no mention of how this is achieved. Sony appear as though they're doing something but realistically it does not ammount to much.

For years I was Pro Sony, I had Sony everything, except Aibo too costly. Your cameras die, your TV's are behind, your games console is stagnant. You let me down. Good bye Sony.

I had 18 Sony accounts, 4 PSN and 14 SOE accounts.
I know Slough 'extremely' well.
For 15 years+ I have burnt all information that contains my details
None of my passwords are the same.
My passwords are always 15 to 20 alpha numeric combinations.
Every year I call my bank or credit card providers to report my cards lost or stolen just to get new acc numbers.
I pay cash for fuel instead of using my card.
AND SONY GIVES AWAY ALL MY PERSONAL DETAILS.

By the way, no reflection on Fraudprotect but -
1. Fraudprotect are based in a run down area of Slough. FACT
2. An area considered by locals as culturally diverse (putting it politically correct) FACT
3. An area with a crime rate issue. FACT

I have a, correction had a Sony 60g console the original one, was impressed with it for all these years, also the fact it was blue ray, I was able to play in my opinion some of the best games ever that were made on the PS2 as well...BLACK, NEED FOR SPEED, THE GET AWAY, ALSO BRILL PS3 GAMES LIKE RESISTANCE, MOTORSTORM!! and good on-line gaming.

Over the last few years my friends from the Dark side tried to woo me to join them (X-BOX) I resisted, However earlier this year I and my friends noted we were having problems getting on line, the Sony network kept crashing etc.

Then the big one.........Sony the worlds biggest console makers, have a disgracefull security system that is breeched, but decide to give the criminals a 5 day advantage over us the customers before they let us know what is going on.
And as I write this message I see the hackers have breeched Sony security system again today. 3rd June 2011.

And what has this billon dollar company offered its loyal customers for its failers..........not enough as far as I am concerned.

Well my Sony association is over, I have recently purchased an XBOX, even if they offered me one, I would refuse, and all my friends have followed me over to the X-BOX.

LONG LIVE THE XBOX!!!!!

Would be nice just to access the internet through the PS3, upon changing password crap i'm still awaiting the e-mail from Sony promised within a 24 hour period, its been over 2 months now. I think for such a big company their customer service is absolutely disgusting! I may get back online with the PS3 in time for Christmas, then again I doubt it.
