Taiwanese manufacturers will begin production of Sony's PlayStation 4 at the end of this year, according to DigiTimes' component-maker sources. Sony apparently plans to ship the PS4 to us lucky consumers sometime in 2012.
The sources also claimed that the PS4 will feature "body-movement-based control", which suggests Sony may do away with its wand-like Move controllers and switch to a system more like Microsoft Kinect.
Last month, a cryptic phone call from a high-level Sony executive possibly, maybe, could have, perhaps, hinted that the PS4 was already in development, but no further details about features or a release date were given. If these latest rumours are to be believed, that phone call carries a little more weight.
Eurogamer argues that these rumours are "ridiculous", claiming Sony will want to milk the profit from the PS3 that it is only just seeing -- the PS3 has so far represented a massive loss for the company. Couple that argument with the monumental troubles Sony has had with the PlayStation Network hacks and we can't help but agree that an entirely new console is unlikely to be released so soon.
It's often the case, however, that leaks about new products come directly from the manufacturers making the parts, so it could be that Sony indeed has something on the way. But we think it's more likely that Sony is planning a refresh of the PS3 -- a PS3 2, if you will -- perhaps in response to Nintendo announcing its next-gen Wii U.
Time will tell what plans Sony has up its sleeve, but we don't suggest you start saving your pennies just yet -- there's probably an iPhone 5 to buy first.

OK going to give everyone a big clue..... PS1 (1994), PS2 (2000), PS3 (2006) PS4 (. . . .)? Answers on a postcard to the usual address and winners will receive a pat on the back and a packet of space raiders.

If they had a PS4 ready to go for next year, they wouldnt have missed the chance to show at this years e3. it would have started the hype train and it would have upstaged Nintendo

I'm with 2012 for an unveiling as well. I mean i dont think PS3 need to upstage Nintendo's new Console as its just basically a PS3 with a silly touchscreen controller. It may not not necessarily be ready for the public purchase but certainly early 2013 at the latest. The reason for this is that technology is moving at a much faster rate in the gaming market, especially with the likes of computer gaming and handheld gaming, particularly with the likes of the android and iphone gaming market. Companies such as Sony need to keep ahead of this and it would be silly to think they just need to unveil at E3 just to bring the hype of a product, Big example iphone 5 will have no problem selling even though it was not shown at E3.

"the PS3 has so far represented a massive -- loss -- for the company"
Really? Hmm... ok then.

This may sound like conspiracy theories gone mad, but i believe that this information could have been "leaked" by a competing brand. How do you effectively slow down sales for a product? Make everyone believe that a brand new version is about to come out just around the corner.

PS4 must match today's PC. If not they can get stuffed.

i do not see the relevance of whether or not ps3 has been a financial loss for sony, to when they will be releasing the next one. sony is bigger than people who say that sort of thing can possibly imagine, and they are not only capable, but driven to absorb temporary losses in the larger battle against their competitors. you really think theyd be sony, if they paced themselves to soak up extra profits, while sony and microsoft quietly slipped ahead of them? thats how you think, and you write about technology?

oops i mean nintendo and microsoft. sony on the brain,
