PSN down for 18 hours maintenance, back Friday 8am

Having PSN trouble? Don't panic! Sony's PlayStation Network is undergoing maintenance today from 2pm, and is scheduled to come back online at 8am tomorrow.

The timing is a tad inconvenient, especially for PS3 gamers in the UK, and will leave some folks feeling cheesed off. Several services are expected to be borked during the mammoth 18-hour maintenance session, which will encompass all of Thursday evening -- prime gaming time.

In a post on its European community page, Sony said that during the period the PlayStation Store would be affected on both PC and console, as well as customer account management and registration.

Home, the 3D social area/platform/thingy, will also be down for the duration.

It's not clear whether your online gaming will be badly affected. The US PlayStation blog says most online play will be spared, and if you were already signed in when the maintenance period begins you should be able to stay signed in.

If you try and sign in between 2pm today and 8am tomorrow however, it's possible you'll find yourself butting up against the maintenance notification page. At which point it could be time to break out some offline games, or go bother your friend who owns an Xbox 360.

Trophy hunters needn't fret, as you'll still be able to collect in-game trophies during the downtime -- they'll be added to your profile once the PlayStation Network is back online.

Sony hasn't said what exactly it is that needs maintaining, but rest assured we'll let you know if it turns out to be anything noteworthy.

Are you deprived of precious PSN? Do you think it's fair for Sony to interfere with services for 18 hours at a time? Feel free to vent in the comments, or on our always-open Facebook wall.

I wish that would tell us what the matinence is for, what good is it to us if we don't even know what's happening, and why is it that updates always happen during europeon times, never for the USA?

Exactly. And since I don't pay a penny for my PSN service, I won't complain.

This is lame. I just got my PS3, downloading blackops took forever, then the upgrade packs for additional maps took another few hours, and once I'm ready to play I get 3 rounds in and the network goes down and I can't even sign in anymore.

Thanks for posting this news update though, because I was wondering what was going on or if I did something wrong setting it up.

Ah well, I guess I wait til tomorrow to start gaming out again.

My uncharted 3 map pack and other DLC didnt work when i bought. I wonder if this PSN maintnence session would fix it. Or other relayed problems. :/

I have both 360 and ps3 and know and servers do need to be taken down some times for periodic checks and issues. if one goes down i switch on the other but DC online down for 18 hours that is not a good thing at all.

Anon 2 feb 1704 it isn't despite the claims. It is not in the media or video menus and not available in the store to download. At least not here in the uk.

PSN still down for downloads. I purchased a game on there today (SUNDAY) but unable to download it, it knows I've bought it but just get an error starting with an 8 and ending with a 2. seems they may have broken somethig with the update. Even tells me you have bought this game just hit download (unfortunately that what I'm hitting when I get this message).

Suspect it has something to do with switching account to the new system.

"PlayStation®Network accounts will soon be renamed Sony Entertainment Network accounts."

is it just me or does sony do more maintenance than the RAF? every week now psn is down for abt 12-16 hours and when you log back on there is often no sign whatsoever of what they have done, the firmware updates seem to be simply to inconvinience gamers.
