PlayStation 4: Where to watch on CNET, and what we expect

Sony is expected to reveal its next PlayStation console later today, at a special event that will give gamers the chance to soak up every juicy detail concerning the PlayStation 4, which is code named Orbis.

As usual, CNET will be on hand to facilitate the squeezing of that sweet, sweet information-juice, so be sure to bookmark this page, where you'll see the event streamed live and enjoy as-it-happens reaction from our experts.

The event begins at 11pm UK time, so you'll need to stay up late to catch the big reveal. Clearly Sony doesn't care much about our sleep patterns.

In the meantime, CNET has plenty of PlayStation 4-related articles to keep your eyes and mind busy. Here's why Sony should get involved in cloud gaming, what the PlayStation 4 needs if it wants to succeed, and a fascinating visual history of Sony's games console.

What we're expecting

Tonight we're expecting to see Sony lift the lid on a completely new console, featuring a controller with an intriguing new panel nestled between its analogue sticks. That mysterious rectangle could be a touch-sensitive panel like the one on the PlayStation Vita, or could be a separate display.

Sony is tipped to get involved in cloud gaming, so we wouldn't be surprised if its new console has the ability to stream games over the Internet. PlayStation 4 games are rumoured to still come on discs, but perhaps we'll be able to stream PlayStation 3 titles.

The PlayStation 4's success will depend on how much it costs to buy. We don't expect Sony to reveal pricing tonight though -- that's likely to follow later in the year, closer to when a new console would actually hit shop shelves.

Our best guess is that it'll be closer to the £300 mark than the £425 asking price for the PlayStation 3. Sony will probably reveal more information on its new console at the E3 show in the summer.

What do you want to see from the next PlayStation? Would you buy a new Sony console, or would you rather wait for Microsoft's anticipated follow-up to the Xbox 360? Let me know in the comments or on our Facebook wall.

I still worry about the second hand gaming market I for 1 borrow a fair few games from friend before getting a copy myself sometime second hand if its fairly old as the price of newly released games is very high I remember buying £30 game for my original PS1 and thinking they were expensive.

Yep, lower the price of the games. Need For Speed Most Wanted of the PS Store is £59.99 plus extra if you want the DLC. That IMO, is too much. £20-30 and I'll buy lots of the games. £10-20 for older ones and less for PS2/PS1/minis stuff.
Also, get more games on the store and we'll purchase them, especially the older games (SSX Tricky please?). Downloading from their store is the way forward for me. It's easy and usually fairly quick. We just need more games and games at the right price.
Cheers,
Capt

@ Capt. I agree the cost online is far to expensive and this is what is hampering more people from moving over to mainly DL's. I for one though will stick with Hard Copies for as long as i can, as not only will it help the hight street but the cost of them falls much quicker than DL's do & there is no way you'll get new games £20-30, more like £30-40 anymore than that unless it's LE version or HUGE AAAAAAAAA+ is ridiculous(EA i'm looking at you here).

Only thing i hope is the rumour of online gaming being subscription only is false, now i think that it will turn out to be nothing more than a rumour but i have that nagging feeling that because SONY have had huge losses elsewhere for a number of years the will be tempted to charge for such a 'service'. If they keep online play free as is & any real fancy add-ons(cloud storage/streaming) for the same price or a small increase as current + subscription as well as keep what you get currently with + aaaaand price the unit itself decently they'll have a winner.

I can't beleive people are complaining about the cost of games - games cost the same or LESS than they did on the SNES, Megadrive etc and thats without factoring in inflation

Streetfighter 2 was 50-60 quid back in 1992. In 2013 terms that would be 90 quid!!
Meanwhile development costs have skyrocketed, and game sales are nowhere near as high as they used to be around early 2000

Bound to be big, though I would laugh if they didn't announce their next console...

Hmm, this has to do very well to compete with the amazing Wii U. Features like Miiverse, the Gamepad, and asymetrical gameplay make the Wii U some tough competition. I doubt the PS4 will be particurlarly good, probably just a beefed up PS3 with a touchpad on the controller that can't compare with the Gamepad.

I agree that console games are too expensive. Meanwhile on PC... XD

cartrages were quite costly to produce. Disks and digital downloads aren't. Even then you did get some variation in game prices. Now what do you get? Games that come out incomplete *cough* ninja gaiden 3 *cough* just so the developers can milk the cash cow for a little longer by releasing stuff that should have been in there in the first place.

@Rowan Cameron Allen....
Has to do well to compete with the wii u, are you like 8 or 9 years old because that is what the wii u is its a consol for children,, the PS4 and the next XBOX will destroy the wii u, only now after years has nintendo finally caught up with sony and microsoft, and when their next gen consols come out then nintendo will fall years behind again, in comparison were talking zx spectrum vs sega megadrive, years and miles apart, muppet

Have you even played it?

The worst assumption you can make is that Nintendo consoles are for children. Just look at all the third party support it's recieved, Mass effect 3, Batman:Arkham city, Assasins creed 3, Call of duty black ops, need I go on? Plus, even in the future, it continues to recieve support, with upcoming games like watchdogs coming to Wii U. In terms of power, the Wii U isn't even far behind the PS4 and Nextbox, it can handle next-gen games just fine. Even for hardcore games, the Gamepad really adds to the experince. just look at ZombiU. Amazing Gamepad functionality, great graphics, and exclusive to Wii U.

Nintendo, unlike others, actually innovate with stuff like the Gamepad. Yes, the PS4 has a touchpad, but it's small, and is in an awkward position, so is unlikely to be use much by developers. You can stream PS3 games onlone with the PS4, but there will be so much lag, as the average U.K broadband speed is only 6MBPS, which is very slow.

Honestly, your just a PSXBOX fanboy who doesn't appreciate true innovation. I could go on for so much longer, but I don't want to waste my time teaching ignorant PSXBOX fanboys about why Nintendo is a unique company that provides innovation more than any other gaming brand.
