US retailers K-mart and Sears have started selling pre-orders of a new Sony PlayStation 3 console, the PS3 Slim. The new gaming machine -- a thinner version of the current fatso console -- has been rumoured for some time and is widely expected to be announced by Sony tonight at its keynote speech at gamescon in Cologne. Both stores are offering the console for $299 (£180), a $100 price cut. It also gets a hard-drive upgrade to 120GB from 80GB on the current model. Our whip-smart colleagues at GameSpot have more on the PS3 Slim here. We'll have more from the conference later.
