When Steve Jobs hired John Sculley to be CEO of Apple in 1983, he didn't anticipate it would cost him his position at the company he co-founded. But in 1985, after a couple of years of heated corporate fisticuffs with Sculley, Jobs quit Apple.
During Sculley's reign at the company, he brought Apple's Newton handheld device to market. It blew. By mid-'93, Apple's stock had tumbled to its lowest point in years. Sculley was axed from his CEO position and resigned a few months later. Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997.
Where is he now?
It's been almost 15 years since Sculley's role at Apple rechristened its founder Steve Jobless. But products smeared with his influence have been inside the CNET UK offices as recently as, well, right now actually. It's a cute little wireless touchscreen device, exclusive to UK phone network O2.
You guessed it: not the iPhone. It's the O2 Joggler, produced by manufacturer OpenPeak -- the company on whose board sits... John Sculley. Apparently, the "renowned technology visionary" was brought in to "lend his legendary acumen in consumer marketing" to OpenPeak in 2004. The result, in the UK at least, was the almost entirely useless Joggler.
But that's not all he's up to. In 2008, he co-founded Watermark Medical -- a health services company that helps people diagnose and treat sleeping disorders -- and serves as the company's chairman.
It's not known if he replaced his Newton with an iPhone, but we'll keep you posted.
