Sky Broadband slow, Sky admits, blames subscriber boost

Sky Broadband is struggling under the weight of new subscribers, Sky admits, resulting in slower-than-normal broadband speeds for customers.

Speaking to the BBC, Sky confirmed, "We are aware of capacity issues in a small number of exchanges," blaming an increase in Web traffic and "a high rate of new customer additions".

That's good news for Sky, then, but cold comfort for Sky Broadband customers, who may have seen sinking speeds spoiling their online jollies. The issue was raised by The Register, which reported Sky Broadband Unlimited customers in Doncaster, North Wales and Bristol were left with Internet slower than a sloth in syrup after Sky crammed too many customers onto its strained network.

We posed the question to our loyal Facebook fans, asking if Sky Broadband customers had noticed a drop in speeds recently.

"Snail like!" one commenter says. "Seems slower than normal," another notes. "Been quite bad lately," one person writes, while another says, "Mine is down from 28Mbps to 17 and upload is down from 9 to 7".

We couldn't publish every response in its original form, so here are a few more comments with swear words changed to the word 'quackers'.

"Total quackers. We switched from BT... nothing but regret", one says. "Quackers," writes another. "Mine has been consistently quackers since I got it," a third miffed commenter writes.

Some customers seem unaffected, however. "Seems fine just now!" one writes, while another says, "So far so good near CF82 (Hengoed, Wales). Still holding a good 12mb down, 1mb up."

How's the broadband 'round your end? Have you experienced speedy downloads with Sky, or is it frustratingly slow? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook wall.

I'm with Sky and our internet is shocking although that's not all Sky's fault but the infrastructure is seriously lacking.
Over 9k houses on an ADSL exchange is bound to be messy come peak time.
We have to pay £17 a month for less than 3mb but at least it's unlimited.

I had sky broadband over 2 years ago. My 20mb broadband ran at around 5Mbps. I knew it would be less...i wouldn't of minded if it could at least hit 9Mbps...but when I called them up they tinkered with the settings and managed to max it at 5.8Mbps. It was on 2Mbps by default.
Absolutely ridiculous

Virgin fibre optic actually runs at the speed it's supposed to...even though my bill is always higher then what was advertised for some reason
OFCOM is useless...they do one high profile case every 1-2 years to justify their existence.

BOLLOCKS !!!
I'm in Glasgow and I've been with sky for just over a year and I have yet to hit 3 Mbps !!
On a good day (which isn't very often) I might just squeeze 2.3 Mbps if i'm lucky !!

Just before xmas I had about 4-5 days of 0.49-0.78 Mbps and they had the cheek to tell me that according to them I was getting 3.8 Mbps, a speed that I have never had even once !!

My best speed was 5 MBs at the maximum subscription model. But at least it's unlimited. There is still a lot of pressure on the infrastructure and improving it is a very slow process. I'm looking with envy at Google Fiber and other 1 Gbs ISP projects and wonder in how many years that will be commonplace.

@ above comment, I totally agree I too am from south wales and sky is really bad, can't even get fiber optics in my area and some of the other internet providers are even worse than sky, feels like I'm back in the 1990's on dial up....

It's simply down to area/exchange as my speed has never changed apart from the odd peak time dip. But then it always go back up shortly afterwards. 10-11Mbps download and 1Mbps upload. For me personally, no issues with Sky.

Ours is down from 14Mbps to less than 5! Long ping times too. I will probably switch to BT Infinity as soon as the Sky contract is up.

Same here in Belfast. I'm on an upto 20mb line. On a good day we'll get between 9 and 12mb which is fine. But recently in the evenings it's been slowing to 0.9mb. I found I can get a 61mb infinity line from BT the other day. Might switch.

My household might join Sky next month, because of their Sports package and I've been on their website and my God they are soo expensive, and now I read their Broadband is slow? People are paying almost £100 per month for the full Sky package, what are spending all that cash on rather than infrastructure??

I am a Virgin Media customer, have to admit I have been considering the switch to Sky Broadband since we have Sky TV and Sports etc.... Slightly annoyed with the cost of Virgins Broadband and the delayed double speed broadband they promised this time last year, been delayed twice already and currently receiving 10mb (for £30 tv, and phone and broadband deal where we don't use the Virgin box). Not a fan of BT with their hidden line rental charges, and any recommendations?

I'd avoid Sky for other reasons. My parents were with them for a while, during which time Sky surreptitiously took over their (previously BT) phone number. No problems until they wanted to leave and move to TalkTalk (who, by the way, are not even nearly as bad these days as everyone seems to think). Come hell or high water Sky wouldn't release their telephone number, despite being out of contract and fully paid up. It seems that although BT have finally agreed to the number portability guidelines set down by OFCOM, Sky have not. Result: my parents had to lose a phone number they'd had for nearly forty years.

Becareful if you go on the forums to complain to Sky about them! I have been blocked from all help services for speaking my mind and telling Sky how bad they are developing their apps for Android.

AGAIN WARNING SKY FORUMS ARE A DICTATORSHIP NOT A PLACE TO SPEAK YOUR MIND!

Eric Manktelow 23 January, 2013 18:15============================================I have the same problem its not down to Sky but the fact that BT refuse to either upgade our telephone lines from Aluminium or not give the area I live in its own green box. We are quite a distance from the exchange which is used by so many houses.
Quoted as being able to get 31mpbs but only get 12mpbs.

This week had a total of 9 hours when it was "down", current download speed is 0.3Mbs, upload 0.4Mbs,

Moved from BT to Sky. Sky speeds aren't as good but as other commenters have pointed out, it's truly unlimited and it still streems HD and my music fine so I'm happy enough.

I currently get 68Mbps FTTC via BT Infinity, totally not impressed as it would appear that most users in the South-West have routing issues caused by BT's Bristol Node, and for some reason that is remedied by a router and modem reset every 2-3days. Intermittent connectivity, HTTPS traffic not loading, massive latency, trust me when I say that speed isn't everything!

Before the router and modem reboot lastnight, speedtest.net was showing latency of 280ms, a download of 1.1Mbps and an upload of 5Mbps.

Give me my reliable 5Mbps connection back anyday!

I was quoted over 9mbps on my sky line with tv for £60 per month, when i received it it didn't work for a week so they told me to wait and they would have me up and running, When i did receive the internet from sky it was too slow to even go on the xbox let abone stream SD video, The speeds i received was between 0.6 - 3 mbps, I waned to cancel but the week buffer period ended so i was stuck with it for a year! After a year i moved to virgin with no hesitation i pay the same amount i did on sky and i get over 60 mbps with Tivo! Never go with sky if your looking for fast internet. (ps. i wasent even a male from the exchange!)

Pathetic speed ... Thinking of leaving them. Do not want to take even if they provide it FREE. Shame on Sky

I am in south manchester and I have notice a serious slow down. I have now resorted to using my 3G on a personal hotspot. I am getting connection speed of 512kb. Bring back dial up...you might as well. If Sky Broadband don't sort out (or at least apologise to their customers direct rather than being lazy and issue a PR statement) they will start to see existing customer leave.

I sure the old phrase goes that it is cheaper to keep your existing customers than acquire new ones. I think they didn't plan this well and in the long run will be worse off

I have had enough! less than a year with Sky but the speed is useless. Unable to watch iPlayer. I am going to dump them! As far as I am concerned this is breach of contract! Should never have left BT.
