This is heavy -- plastic brick magnate Lego has given the official nod to a fan-built Back to the Future DeLorean set, confirming that the nerd-pleasing time machine set will be going on sale next year.
The small but perfectly formed toy was chosen to enter the official Lego pantheon after it received over 10,000 votes on Lego Cuusoo, a Kickstarter-style site where brick-assembling enthusiasts can submit their dream kits to the bigwigs in Denmark.
The final design of the set isn't confirmed yet, as Lego says it's still in talks with Universal over the upcoming product. Fingers crossed the set that hits shop shelves is faithful to the fan-designed original, which features tiny a Lego Marty McFly and Doc Brown, as well as the DeLorean's famous gull-wing doors.
The wheels on the prototype model also fold up, transforming the time-travelling DMC-12 into flight-capable mode. You'll probably have to supply your own plutonium, however.
Enthusiastic amateurs who have their projects chosen for officialdom receive 1 per cent of Lego's profits once the set goes on sale. Generous designers Masashi Togami and Team BTTF have opted to send that cut directly to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. Nice one, chaps.
The set beat three other Lego projects that met the 10,000 votes criteria, including a Lego Eve Online ship, Lego Legend of Zelda and a modular Western town.
Next up for consideration are a Lego Mars Curiosity Rover, and the natural evolution of that dust-proof robot -- the Star Wars Sandcrawler. A set based on the Portal videogames is also up for review.
I'm sure you can't wait to get your mitts on the Lego DeLorean, but in the meantime check out our hands-on video of the full-sized electric DeLorean, and watch a time-lapse of Rich Trenholm and myself assembling some of the new Hobbit Lego -- both clips embedded below.
