HMV stops online orders as potential buyers circle

HMV has powered down its HMV.com website, halting online orders entirely, as the longstanding retailer enters administration.

Although its high street shops are still open, HMV says its website "has been suspended following the appointment of the Joint Administrators", going on to confirm, "No purchases can be made online until further notice."

HMV is continuing its post-Christmas blue cross sale in an effort to generate more cash, but for the time being it seems any bargains you snap up will have to happen over the till.

It's possible HMV will reopen its site further into the administration process, though when now-extinct retailer Comet went the same way last year (also turning to administrators Deloitte), it similarly put the kibosh on online orders.

The 91-year-old company has sparked anger by refusing to accept gift cards or vouchers following the news that it was looking for a buyer. If you had an outstanding order with its online service, it's unclear what will happen to your purchase -- I've contacted Deloitte about this, and also to ask whether the site will reopen, and I'll update this story if I hear back.

HMV could have a future, meanwhile, as Deloitte says it's been contacted by parties interested in buying the ailing chain, Sky News reports. It's not clear who would be keen to snap up the firm, but as a major high-street name HMV's business could hold some appeal, even though the existing management wasn't able to make enough cash to keep it afloat.

Would you miss HMV if it vanished from the UK high street? Or would you rather do your shopping online? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook wall.

I wouldnt miss HMV, after the hassle I got yesterday while trying to use the gift card my aunt gave me for Christmas I wish they would go now, I feel sorry for the employees as for the big shots of HMV they can rot in hell, continuing to sell gift vouchers even though they knew this would happen, its a disgrace.
Online shopping is the way forward, new goods are much cheaper and yoiu get less shocks and hassle, plus I'm pretty sure online retailers like Amazon aren't going to go into administration any time soon OR any time at all.

HMV should have seen the prices online competitors are charging (TDKR £15 Blu-Ray brand new on Amazon, £20 in hmv)

Thats what happens when a company pays tax. (Or did you somehow miss the amount Amazon theoretically owes the Treasury or the damage it has done to our economy?)

I would be very sorry if HMV shops left the high street. All very well down loading and buying online, but actually picking up and looking at a box in a shop and receiving a physical presents as opposed to a piece of paper means nothing. High Street shopping gets you out of the house communicating and interacting with people. Sometimes using that old fashion stuff called money and maths. The world will soon turn into virtual trolls, unable to write without the use of a keyboard.

Hello, any news on outstanding online orders placed, paid for but not received? I don't know if I should wait or contact my bank to cancel payment (if that's even possible)? Please help!
Thank you!
