Keeping the planet in good working order doesn't have to mean wearing open-toe sandals, reading by candlelight and foregoing your favourite TV show. You can have fun and show some love to your brethren, and still be unbearably smug about your carbon footprint. We've rounded up some of our favourite green gifts from our sister site SmartPlanet, which takes a realistic, fun and in-depth look at the greenest and green-less products around. And not a beard in sight.
Products landing on SmartPlanet are judged on four criteria: quality, value, ethics and greenness. This means that even if you're not entirely persuaded by the climate-change arguments, you can still get a handle on whether something's worth your hard-earned, and whether the people who make it are getting a fair deal.
We'd like to know how much energy we're expending in real-time, preferably measured in units of Battenberg and daiquiris. Sadly that's not possible, but the next best thing is our first choice from the SP: the DIY Kyoto Wattson 01, a real-time electricity meter that shows just how much power your household appliances use. It costs £150 and claims to save 3 to 15 per cent off the leccy bill.
