Back to the Future Mattel hoverboard looks ace, won't hover

Good news for those of you anxiously watching the calendar tick slowly towards 2015 -- Mattel is building a replica of the iconic hoverboard from Back to the Future.

The 1:1 replica, revealed at the New York Toy Fair, perfectly evokes the garish pinks of Marty McFly's original, and will come complete with "multiple whooshing sounds", according to Mattycollector.com. It will 'glide' over most surfaces too, but won't actually hover. Boo!

Still, toy collectors will be impressed by the detail -- it's even got a hole in it where McFly ripped the handlebars off, the selfish time-travelling tyke.

If you want to get one, orders will be taken from 1-20 March, with the finished product shipping out in the last couple of months of 2012. Worryingly, the site states that because it's a 'high-cost item', there will be a minimum number of orders required before the hoverboard goes into production, so it's time to band together with your fellow film geeks.

While a step in the right direction, I'm still left asking, "Where's my hoverboard?!" I was also disappointed to find last year's Back to the Future edition Nike trainers didn't actually lace themselves up.

Still, last month I did get to sit inside a prototype of an electric DeLorean -- while unable to fly and not powered by garbage, this battery-powered classic vehicle could be a more... realistic vision of our high tech future.

Oh well. Here's hoping some enterprising folks manage to hack Mattel's replica hoverboard and turn it into the real deal before 2015, the year in which Part II is set. Otherwise I may be forced to confront the fact that Back to the Future is just a movie, and not a terrifying documentary sent back through time.

Is there any other Back to the Future tech you're still waiting impatiently for? When do we get the Hydrator thing that makes tiny pizzas massive? If you know, please tell me in the comments, or on our Facebook wall.
