Rumours are flying that Apple has an event planned this month in New York. But if it's not the iPad 3 or Apple TV, what could it be?
The iPhone-spawning company is plotting some kind of announcement, AllThingsD reports, citing sources "close to the situation". But those same sources reckon Apple isn't about to unveil a new iPad, or the Apple TV set of legend.
So it's likely to be some kind of advertising or publishing launch instead. Word is the event will involve Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet software and services.
Cue heads up things like the iTunes Store, the App Store, as well as iAds, iCloud and the iBookstore.
So the news is likely to be a software-related treat. Naturally we'd rather have a new bit of hardware, but we're still intrigued -- Apple's App Store is arguably the biggest weapon in the company's arsenal, filling your fruit-branded gadgets with time-wasting apps and entertaining games. Meanwhile iTunes Match is making Apple's music offering more tempting.
It's possible that Apple is timing the announcement -- whatever it may be -- to coincide with CES, the massive tech trade show that kicks off next week in Las Vegas. At CES major tech companies will be unveiling 2012's hottest new gadgetry, so Apple could well be plotting to steal their thunder, as it did in 2007 with the announcement of the first iPhone.
Rest assured you'll know as soon as we do, but in the meantime tell us what you'd like to see unveiled in the comments, or on our Facebook wall.
