If you've never been bothered to put as much effort into figuring out how to program your central heating thermostat as you do seeking out the latest apps, then Nest could be the solution that takes the chill out of your tootsies.
CNET UK's Luke Westaway stumbled across Nest at the CES 2012 show in Las Vegas. Hailed as the thermostat of the future, it's controlled via a free iOS or Android app, or using a web browser. This means you can prompt it to come on while idly playing with your phone on the bus home from work.
This simple-to-use thermostat replacer is strapped to your wall where your boring old beige box would be. You can control the temperature of your home by swivelling the dial or tweaking it remotely from your iPhone, iPad, Android device or computer.
You can teach it energy-saving habits such as remembering to switch off when you leave the house, or lowering the temperature a notch to save on bills. A nifty energy history shows you how much juice you're using daily.
Alas, it's only available in the US, but fingers crossed it will make it over to the UK soon.
