HD DVD disc sales figures: Blu-ray gets really cross
In the latest skirmish in the hi-def format war, the HD DVD promotion group announced on Monday that in Europe, HD DVD is the king of the 'attach rate' -- the average number of discs each person buys for their player. The headline number was that HD DVD owners are buying, on average, 3.8 movies each, with Blu-ray owners buying just 0.6 discs each.
Unfortunately, as exciting as these figures might appear to HD DVD supporters, there's no mention of how the figures were arrived at. For a start, the HD DVD group routinely refuses to include the PlayStation 3 as a Blu-ray player, claiming most people don't buy the PS3 to watch movies on.
These attach-rate figures, however, are almost certain to include the PS3, thus making HD DVD look better, but making it appear Blu-ray discs aren't selling. Nothing could be further from the truth, because Blu-ray is still outselling HD DVD in terms of number of discs shipped.
All of this has made Frank Simonis of the Blu-ray group very angry indeed. In an interview with tech.co.uk he vented his spleen saying, "The HD DVD Group have manipulated the GfK data." He went on to say, "Honest to God, the Blu-ray Disc Association would never do this. We've seen so much rubbish come from the HD DVD Group it's unbelievable." Which gave us a good chuckle, because barely a week goes by without the BDA or one of its members making some outlandish claim that Blu-ray has won the format war or will win it at some point soon.
The fact of the matter is that whoever releases numbers of units sold has a motive for doing so. The only figures you can rely on are those that are totally independent, which is one of the reasons the Amazon sales rank has become such an interesting way of measuring how the different formats are doing.
The full figures for the UK, as claimed by the HD DVD group, are 3.7 movies on HD DVD versus 0.8 on Blu-ray. The biggest HD DVD market is France, where 5 discs were sold per player on HD DVD and 0.6 on Blu-ray. However you look at it, HD DVD is enjoying some success at the moment, even if it is manipulating the figures. -Ian Morris

It's very funny how the Blu-ray side want a game console reclassified as a standalone player when it suits them and not when the dreadful attachment rate is clear to all.
The truth is that when the US retail industry 'called' this war they did so for HD DVD, the Walmarts etc of this world will have their way.
.....and if the format with the best complete spec & features at the keenest prices and which has the most available and exclusive movie content can't sell @ $98 or even $199 then what hope for the Blu-ray gang with less content & their obsolescent & over-priced players?

One anonymous commentator of this article said the retailers 'called this war.' That's a flat out lie. Wal-Mart supports both formats and has both players for sale and both format's movies for sale. Retailers that have sided with a format have been Target, JB, Blockbuster and the HTSA (made up of over 50 retailers) which have all sided with Blu-ray. This same commentator said Blu-ray has 'dreadful attach rates.' What's dreadful about them? Since when has attach rates been the metric for success? Blu-ray has outsold HD DVD by 2:1 to 3:1 all year in software and has hammered HD DVD in hardware by even more. This is why the HD DVD side is clammering to look for anything positive and has picked 'attach rates,' and obvious canard because no industry has ever measured their success based on attach rates. When they're losing so badly on actual sales figures they must come up with something. Spin-masters aren't evil, they're just optimistic.

Attatch rate figures were used because sales numbers are embarassing to the hd dvd camp. All prior comparisons brought by HD DVD were manlipulated as the PS3 was not included as a blu-ray player. They stated it was a gaming system and then claimed more players worldwide. Truth being if the PS3 was included they would never make the results public. Now with an overwhelming number of PS3s with blu-ray players they manipulate the numbers again, now including the PS3 as a blu ray player for their attatch rate figures. The real sales numbers are quite different, as blu-ray has OUTSOLD HD DVD EVERY WEEK THIS YEAR! (and will next year) But without manipulating the numbers its hard to keep the boat from sinking. Toshibia wants to maintain its royalties on its HD DVD format just as it has off its DVD format the last ten years, Its trying every dirty trick(buying off Paramount/Dreamworks, bias sales claims, media payoffs, etc...) yet still sinking. Until there is one format, many are scared to make a decision. Afraid they will end up with a "Betamax" unfortunatly, the war continues, as do HD DVDs underhanded efforts.

By the time they settle this one, we'll all be getting our content through the internet anyway.

what, the same way the bluray camp ignore the 360 drive?
Sorry but both camps fudge the figures, and neither of them can be trusted, but then again, the figures mean naff all anyways...so why should we care?
at the end of the day, both formats have the same picture quality and same sound quality. At the moment the HDDVD is cheaper, and has no issues with unfinished specs.

I truly hope HD-DVD wins. I hate that if I buy a laptop/computer with a blu-ray drive I can't burn DVDs. Cost per mb DVD are still the best format for storing disc storage at the moment and a HD-DVD gives you the best of both - watch HD movies, burn CDs/DVDs and soon HD-DVDs. Plus Sony have a rep for bringing out formats that die on their bums - Betamax, Mini-Disc, UMD - I am shocked Blu-ray has done so well so far but so much of that seems to be linked with the PS3 which is a game console and has boosted Blu-ray sales because the owners don't seem to have many good games to play and want to make the most of their expensive bit of hardware with a blu-ray movie.
Long Live HD-DVD

Its funny how the HD-DVD group include the PS3 in their stats when they want to make the Bluray attach rate look bad but they don't include it when they talk about total player sales.
