Revo AXiS Internet radio connects to Last.fm, your finger

The Revo AXiS speaker system from Advanced MP3 Players is packing enough connections to link to almost any device you can throw at it -- though plugging it in is usually better than throwing. Unusually, it even offers Last.fm, the bespoke music-streaming service.

As such, it comes with a dock for your iPod or iPhone -- what speakers don't these days? -- and Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi can connect to your home network to stream songs from your hard-drive and access Internet radio with the choice of over 13,000 stations. It still supports DAB and FM radio -- because you can't teach an old luddite new tricks.

The AXiS sports a nifty full-colour 3.5-inch touchscreen to navigate the menus. All the usual ports you'd expect from speakers are here, namely aux-in and a 3.5mm jack. It also supports a video-out for iPod and iPhone devices through composite video ports on its rear.

Neatly, the Revo AXiS comes with a free 31-day trial of Last.fm (which, we should mention, is also owned by our parent company CBS Interactive). This will make use of its 'Click and Play' functionality to easily choose music via the touchscreen navigation. After the trial is finished, however, it'll cost users in the UK £3 per month to continue using the service, but doing so will allow you to use Last.fm on any supported device, as well as the AXiS.

With an 8W class-D amp, Revo reckons it'll deliver impressive clarity and bass response, but we'll wait to hear it for ourselves.

The Revo AXiS is due for release in October and can be pre-ordered now from Advanced MP3 Players for £199.

Revo Axis – Great table top radio but if you want it at your bedside look elsewhere!

I have recently received my Revo Axis in great condition and very timely. After the initial excitement I'd like to pass some thoughts on the radio:

the good ...
• It looks GREAT!
• It Sounds great given its size.
• Its feature rich.
• Great search functions.
• The touch screen is great.
• the interface works well.

The bad ...
• the lowest level contrast still lights up my whole bedroom at night and making it impossible to look at when the lights are off without completely waking me up. Even functioning as a clock only it is too bright to even leave in the general direction of the bed. It like having a night light one foot from your face while trying to sleep!
• The sleep function, which is one of the main reason I purchased the radio, is buried many, many levels down the menu that makes it difficult to navigate when you are just getting into bed much less when you are trying to turn it back on in the middle of the night. Seems if I want an easy sleep function I am forced to buy a remote to operate a bed side radio in arms reach feels like a marketing gimmick for extra revenue. I think this feature should be on the bottom left corner of the clock screen opposite the alarm button so it can be set/reset with a single click in the wee hours of the night much like my last two short wave radios.

My overall comment is that this is a great table top radio in every respect but if you are looking for something in the bedroom look elsewhere; 5 stars as a desktop radio, 1 star as a bedroom radio and its even a bad bedroom clock!

Follow up...

WOW! Great service from the Revo team!

They have offered to refund the radio but will be applying patch shortly to fix the contrast issue and have resolved the sleep issue to my satisfaction hence i'll happily keep the radio. From talking to the top brass at Revo seems this was never designed as a clock radio but with these fixes in place should work great!

Many thanks to the team at Revo!

Streaming Audio Mode only possible with Windows Media Player?
Is it somehow also possible with Winamp, my only and favourite player?
Look forward to your comment.

Great bit of kit without doubt. A good sound and some good free stations especially on the internet. I also had excellent service support when I had a problem so 5 stars on that one. My only points are how bright the bloody thing is! Please sort this!!!

Also the free internet stations are limited too certainly I can't find any drum and bass and some very local stations which I know are on the internet. My kids think the Revo is for old people because of the difficulty in finding selected stations. It maybe me though and not understanding what I am doing!! I don't think so though.

And finally and second only to the brightness issue is LastFM and subscription. Revo please add free similar type access to internet radio. There are loads on the web which are free or pay and a choice would be great. In the financial current climate I am paying enough for broadband nevermind extra to listen to the radio on the internet. It makes an expensive bit of kit a hell of a lot more expensive.
