If you like big media players and despise spare pocket space, the Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 is the very fellow for you. It's an Android 2.2 device that wants to lend a helping hand in watching all that video you have. And it's massive.
At a size of 78 by 141 by 12mm and flaunting a huge 5-inch screen, we're unsure whether this guy qualifies more as a tablet than a media player, but let's not get bogged down in semantics -- we can all agree it's big. Bigger than it's little brother the Galaxy S WiFi 4.0, certainly.
Like the 4.0 version, the 5.0 is modelled on the Galaxy S smart phone, just without the phone functionality. That means it's as a device to enjoy music, video and Web browsing as you would on an iPod touch. To this end, the WiFi 5.0 packs Android 2.2, enabling you to download your favourite apps from the Android Market and make use of its excellent Web browser. You will be limited to using that at home or with Wi-Fi hotspots, however, as there's no 3G.
Samsung hasn't confirmed the type of tech the 5-inch screen uses, but we expect it'll be the same 480x800-pixel Clear LCD seen on its 4.0 sibling, rather than the spectacular Super AMOLED Plus of the Galaxy S II.
We have no word on how much Samsung will want for this mini tablet/giant media player, but we shall find out nearer to its launch later in the year.
