Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 dwarfs the iPod Touch, runs ICS

Samsung seems to be one of the few companies still doing battle with Apple's iPod Touch. So how do you take on the best? Go big. That's Samsung's reasoning, anyway.

The Galaxy Player 5.8 has a whopping 5.8-inch screen, which makes even the Galaxy Note seem small, SlashGear reports. Its resolution of 960x540 pixels isn't as sharp as the Note's though.

It runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich, with Samsung's own TouchWiz UI on top. There's no word on whether it'll get the upgrade to Jelly Bean at some point, but we can hope. Samsung's Learning Hub is also on-board, along with AllShare Play streaming support and Samsung's Chat messenger service.

Inside it's got 16 or 32GB of memory, with a microSD card slot letting you add up to 32GB more. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and GPS come as standard.

It comes in white or black and will be on sale in September, though there's no word on a price yet. Expect to hear more when IFA kicks off next week.

Samsung's Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 had a 5-inch screen, but that was its biggest MP3 player before this monster shifted into view. (The Galaxy S comes in a diddy 4.2-inch size as well, if these are too much for you.) The iPod Touch is a measly 3.5 inches by comparison.

Samsung is riding the trend for bigger devices at the moment, with its Galaxy Note 2 rumoured to be bigger than the original's 5.3 inches. Apple is also thought to be getting in on the act, with its iPhone 5 rumoured to have a 4-inch screen. It's most probably stuck with smaller screens until now because it didn't want to sacrifice battery life.

What do you think of the Galaxy Player 5.8? Is it too big? Let me know in the comments, or on Facebook.

Seems braindead. If you are making a device that big, for entertainment (as in, not as a phone) then having it not be native 720P seems ridiculous... and it is not as if they don't have the tech nor the panels, this is Samsung after all...

I dont think Samsung should make stuff like this, who is gonna buy this, whatever this is?? The Galaxy Note (and Note 2) is the obvious choice if someone wants a big media player. Then a tablet for those who want a bigger screen. Also, as for the Ipod Touch, who buys that? There are really good phones out there can do what these media players do and a whole lot more.

This is designed for men, to whom the size matters.
The 3.5 to 5 inch phones are too small for men's fingers. Cannot type without repeating corrections.
The 7 to 10 inch tablets are too large to carry without a purse.
So this 5.to 5.8 inch form factor is ideal for men.
Good instinct, Samsung!

It's not just men who have big fingers Mr ONCE!!!!!! There's millions of us mere females who are not the size of a Barbie! WE too prefer large buttons. Samsung have got it right. Bigger IS better

960x540 px resolution on a 5.8 inch screen, it's a joke.

I would consider this if I did not already have a 5.0. I'm 72, so am not part of anyone's target demographic, but the 5.0 is just what I need to keep my home and on-the-go calendars synched. You know-- a pda. Let's get real; this is a tablet. I do not understand the marketing strategy of creating an all-purpose WiFi android device and naming it for one of its functions. I have a book reader, Audible audiobook reader, GPS navigation, SeriusXM radio app, email, Google calendar, but no music, no videos, no games. My phone is a 5-year-old flip phone, and I pay no data plan, thank you very much.
As for the original question: the 5.0 is pretty big already to carry in my bag; I would have to handle both to decide if 5.8 is too big.

190 pixels per inch is a joke now? That resolution is just fine, I have a Galaxy Player 5.0 and the screen looks better than my iPod Touch 5g, brighter whites and better overall white balance, even though the iPod has much higher ppi.

I will buy the Galaxy 5.8 the second it comes to the USA! It is the perfect size, because 7-inch tablets are too heavy to hold in your hands for long periods of time, and the iPod Touch screen is too damn small. Wozniak is right, Apple IS arrogant!
