It might not be as impressive as iTunes' half-a-billion song downloads, but an online music store with a difference has reached its own impressive milestone this week. Musicnotes.com has sold it's one millionth book of digital sheet music. Artists with their sheet music available here include Coldplay, Ray Charles and Ben Folds (pictured).
We're keen musicians here at Crave, but we have these haunting childhood memories of a piano teacher slapping us on the hands with a splintered ruler and screaming, "C sharp, not A, you munchkin". A few months of this and sheet music was forever associated with pain. Perhaps this digital version is the best way to desensitise ourselves.
Sheet music might seem like an archaic thing to be flogging in the digital age, but there's obviously plenty of musicians out there with a lust for staves. The system uses proprietary player software that's only available for PC (odd, considering that the Mac is such a popular platform for recording musicians), but you can view and print Musicnotes' digital sheet music on both Mac and PC. If you like the surrealism of downloading digital music that ends up on a sheet of paper, Musicnotes can help. -CS
