Apple's seven-year-old first-gen iPod nano -- you know, the one that Steve Jobs pulled out of his jeans coin pocket -- has proved difficult to prise from tech lovers' fingers, with a million people taking up last year's product recall.
Or at least that's what one Apple customer service rep let slip to a nano owner, who told us he was warned his iPod replacement might take "a few weeks" -- because the programme was proving far more popular than the fruity one had bargained for.
"We were expecting to get 25,000 or 30,000 back but we've had over a million," the Apple rep told our source. "(We) had to start up a factory line to make the replacement bits," the rep added.
Apple had issued a recall and replacement programme for select first-gen iPod nanos last year, due to a risk of battery overheating. The number of units sent back is surprising, given this nano was launched in September 2005, which makes it positively decrepit in tech terms, where even upgrading yearly is too sluggish for some.
"Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006," it noted in a statement at the time of recall. "This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages."
At the time of writing, Apple had not responded to a request to confirm the numbers -- but we're smitten by this tale of true love through the tech ages for the trusty little MP3 player.

I received a new nano 'touch' too. I now use that instead of my 1st gen touch. Sort of miss my old nano though. That was a design classic in miniature.

I kind of didn't want to part with my old nano, it's such a well designed little thing. I sent it last week and got the new 6th gen in the mail yesterday. It took 4 days... talk about forever!

We were using our nano in the kids' room - so we sent it in as soon as we received the recall notice! Taking no chances with the little ones!

I replaced my original 2Gb iPod nano in this program.
Apple sent me back a new 8Gb 6th gen nano, so I bought a TikTok strap, and now have it as a watch!

It took Apple a month to get me my replacement. Expecting a refurbished 1st gen nano, I was kinda sad when I received an iPod Nano 5th gen. I wanted an old iPod Nano so I could show my kids when how cool Apple was when I was young.
Not a bad deal though. My first gen iPod came with 1GB of space. The replacement has 8GB of space and a nifty touch screen. I guess if I had to complain I could say that I spent $200 on my first nano and a refurbished iPod Nano 5th gen is worth less than $100 today.

How long does it take for the replacement box to put your old nano in to ship and get to your house? I ordered it a week or two ago, when should the replacement box come in?

Do you have to have the receipt?

I only just heard about this recall today after chatting about the new 7th generation iPod in the Apple store. I mentioned that my old 1st gen gets warm and he told me about this replacement recall. I went to the website and put in my serial number and they are sending me a box for returning it to them. fantastic I am hoping for the new model. I have to say the first generation has the best design ever and I will miss it but its only 1gb.

Anonymous of October 26, what did you get from Apple?
I just dug up my old Mark One and put in a request.
