Samsung YP-P3: Music, haptics, capacitive plastics

Samsung recently launched the best MP3 player it's ever created -- the YP-Q1. We've covered it in great detail over the last couple of months, but it was never a successor to the decent -- and now discontinued -- YP-P2. The YP-P3, however, is.

Engadget picked up a post from DAPReview with some confirmed specs for the touch-sensitive P3, which proves Samsung has finally started taking its players to the level they need to compete with the best on the market. Out of the box it'll support MP3, AAC, WMA, FLAC and OGG audio formats, plus H.264 and WMV video formats.

A 76mm (3-inch) touch-sensitive screen (presumably capacitive, like the YP-P2 and iPod touch) supports a resolution of 480x272 pixels. It's backed by haptic technology, delivering gentle rumbles upon key presses, in the vein of the Motorola Rokr E8 and iRiver Spinn.

We're also assuming Samsung's new player will support BBC iPlayer content, as both the previous P2 and recent Q1 did, and it's a hot selling point in our UK eyes. Watching Louis Theroux on the Tube? Hells yeah!

We've been calling Samsung this morning to get word on UK release dates and prices, but to no avail. We have every expectation this will come to the U of K though, with a post-CES announcement highly likely. We'll keep you posted.
