We7 adds Sony BMG catalogue for free streaming

MP3 Players

We7 has announced the immediate availability of 250,000 songs from major record label Sony BMG's back catalogue, including songs from Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, Kasabian and Leona Lewis.

The songs are for streaming only and include a 10-second advertisement embedded at the start of every track. If users want to buy the tracks without ads, they are provided with a link to the iTunes store. Tracks cannot currently be bought from We7 itself.

Only UK users will be able to take advantage of the deal.

Last.fm also offers the streaming of full Sony BMG songs, but with ads displayed only on the Web site, and not in audible form inside the tracks themselves. Both sites are seen as 'taster' services to help users discover new music and to see if they like recommendations friends have made for them.

During a BBC Radio 5 Live interview this morning with CNET.co.uk and We7 CTO Gareth Reakes, Reakes stated that it was "not the plan whatsoever" to compete with the likes of iTunes. When asked if he sees the other major labels signing up to provide their catalogues, he said We7 "hopes to get all of the music".

Anyone can sign up to the site for free and listen to Sony BMG's back catalogue online from today. -Nate Lanxon
