Challenging the iPod: Samsung YP-Z5
Tags: mac os, transfer, nano, yp
Samsung's had a tough time in the MP3 player wars. Not long ago the company looked like a little boy with two broken legs hobbling down the avenue of despair, but now it has risen to its feet and begun hurling insults at the dominant MP3 player, Apple's iPod nano. The interface on the YP-Z5 is slick, far slicker than Apple's. It's approximately the same size as the nano, but its battery life is a mammoth 38 hours, with 24 hours of continous music play.
The sucker punch here may be the transfer software -- there is none. Samsung has wisely avoided the self-destructive policy of companies like Sony, which uses a proprietary transfer software hot from the depths of hell. Samsung's new player is drag-and-drop, which means it works just like an external hard disk -- making the YP-Z5 completely platform independent.
It's all the Crave monkeys can do to stop jumping up and down and screaming like gleeful cheerleaders. This is what we've been urging manufacturers to do for ages. Finally a company has woken up and taken real steps towards nailing Apple to the wall.
The YP-Z5 is available in 2GB and 4GB versions. Crave tested it out this afternoon and the UI transitions give even Mac OS X a run for its money. Samsung exclusively revealed to Crave that it has run video on the YP-Z5, but has chosen not to include this in its initial release pending further testing. At last it looks like an MP3 player from someone other than Big White may actually be worth using. Nice one, Samsung.

Hi - the samsung media software supplied installed incorrectly, but didn't notify me, and the upshot of this was that it also stripped my wallpapers - but they can't be recovered, and the Samsung website is a joke, in terms of any real help beyond Hi, Spend More With Us.... so can anyone email me replacement copies? I lost the lot. I know how to change them and everything, no troubles there, and there are no backups as I had to strip the samsung files out of the registry and fully reinstall to fix the problem. Many thanks to anyone who can stick them to an email and post them to me - I really liked them, they were one of the best features. Very pretty. Thanks

Also, an easier way of uploading your music onto your samsung
My computer > Samsung (when connected) and then the memory should come up and copy and paste the music you want into the music file, same with pictures. alot easier than windows media player. stuff that!

Have had my YP-Z5 since March of 2007 and the thing is simply fabulous. A minor problem at times connecting to my pc in that it isn't always recognized, but fiddling with it seems to solve that. Sincs well with WMP10 and easy to add/delete pics or music. Play time is unbelieveable and sound quality is very good. Beats the heck out of my son's nano. LOL- going to buy another one for my wife.

Well, it's been over 2 years and I still have my YP. It's still alive, working well - nothing has changed since the day I got it. Great player.

I recently purchased the Samsung YP-Z5 and it is a great mp3 player but my cat got ahold of the Usb cable. it looks kinda like my ipod nanos usb cable/charger anyone know if they are compatable?
AnonymousSun 10 February, 2008 8:30pm
in my sence its better than ipod first series
AnonymousFri 15 February, 2008 7:58pm
For those who don't know, the YP-Z5 is compatible with downloads from Napster. I've had mine for 2 years now, completely trouble free. The only little nag is, that if you let the battery run down too far, be patient with re-charging. it may take an hour or longer to kick the battery back into function. This is a great MP3 player.
