Sony NEX-6 shares Wi-Fi and apps with NEX-5R, adds viewinder

Cameras that can talk to the Internet -- what will they think of next?! Yes, the Sony NEX-6, the latest mirrorless compact system camera in Sony's NEX range, shares photos online and downloads apps, as well as snapping 16.1-megapixel pictures and shooting 1080p high-definition video.

Like the Sony NEX-5R, also announced recently, the NEX-6 packs Wi-Fi and takes on apps to beef up the list of features. Those built-in features include a fold-out 3-inch OLED screen and Fast Hybrid autofocus, which uses phase-detection AF to quickly detect your subject, then switches to contrast-detection to fine-tune the focus.

If you're more of a holding-the-camera-to-your-face type there's an OLED electronic viewfinder too, which is something the NEX-5R lacks. You also get a pop-up flash -- something missing from many previous mirrorless cameras -- and a new Multi Interface Shoe for adding extras like a microphone or more powerful flash.

Speed is a major factor with the NEX-6, which can shoot up to 10 frames per second. Inside is a 16.1-megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor.

If these features aren't enough, you can add more via the built-in Wi-Fi by downloading apps from the Sony PlayMemories app store, the first dedicated app shop for cameras. You can also use the Wi-Fi to share pictures with your phone or tablet, or with your friends on social networks or email.

The NEX-6 lands in shops in mid-November, with prices yet to be confirmed.
