Photos: Real sciencey words about Fujifilm's FinePix S8100fd

We Cravers are qualified scientists. It's true. We went to university and everything -- well, when we say 'went', we mean 'sent off for a certificate off the Internet'. Who then could be better qualified to take a tour of all the clever camera-type stuff inside the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd? Don your white coat and join us.

The S8100 is a 10-megapixel superzoom with an 18x zoom lens -- more on that in a minute -- with image stabilisation and face detection. Pay attention -- here comes the science words: face detection works by triangularating a subject's eyes and mouth, using an algorithmic doohickey to optimalise focus, white balance and exposure for up to ten faces in a single frame. A movement tracking doodad keeps the camera locked on to its subjects as they movemulate around the frame.

Face detection also powers the automatic red-eye reducification system, which removifies red eye caused by light from the flash reflectoring in the pupils. Zoom bracketing performs a similar action using Fujifilm's Face Detection Technology to lock its zoom action on a subject's physiognomy automatically as they enter the shot.

Other features include a super macro mode that allows you to get as close as 1cm to your subject. We'll be testing these features out in our forthcoming review, using the most rigomorous scientifical protocols and also taking some pictures down the pub. The Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd is available now for around £220. Click through the photos to see more of the camera, including scientific proof that size doesn't matter. -Rich Trenholm
