Nikon D3200 dSLR turns your Android phone into a viewfinder

As powerful as camera phones are, there's no substitute for a dSLR. But that doesn't mean dSLRs and phones can't make sweet music together, and the new Nikon D3200 does exactly that -- thanks to an app that lets you control this new 24-megapixel dSLR with your Android smart phone.

We got our hands on the D3200 ahead of its release in mid-May. Hit play on the video above to see it in action, and check out my first impressions in our preview.

The 24-megapixel D3200 is an entry-level model, designed to not only offer dSLR features, but also teach you how to use them. The clever guide mode holds your hand and walks you through different effects, like artily blurring the background of a portrait or capturing a gorgeous blood-red sunset.

As well as 24-megapixel snaps, the D3200 shoots 1080p video, with a stereo mic jack to beef up the sound.

And then there's the app. We're yet to try out the Nikon Android app, but it sounds like a fantastic idea. Set up your camera and you can dart around your studio checking out different angles, or join a group shot at a party by nipping into the picture yourself. You can see what the camera sees right there on your phone's screen, ready to adjust settings then hit the shutter for a remote-controlled snap.

iPhone and iPad owners will have to wait until autumn. You'll also have to wait if you want the glossy, cherry-red model pictured above, as the red-tinted release date hasn't been confirmed yet.

The D3200 joins the Nikon line-up between the entry-level Nikon D3100 and Nikon D5100. The 14-megapixel D3100 isn't being retired though, and will continue to be the beginner's model.
