Compact cameras: we love 'em. They slip in your pocket, you whip them out, you take a picture, put the picture on Facebook. Job's a good'un. But simple to operate doesn't mean you can't expect attention to detail, and Panasonic certainly knows where the devil is. So from first impressions, the 10-megapixel DMC-FS20 is shaping up to be another little Lumix belter.
Panasonic is no slouch in the design department, although the FS series sport a silver bar where the right hand grips, which hits a wrong note. At least this one is raised enough to grip, unlike the otherwise excellent FS5.
The attention to detail continues with an easy zoom button, which makes the zoom leap to its full extent and back again, a hinged door to protect the sockets, and a metal tripod bush. It's controlled via a small joystick, flattened into a mushroom shape for maximum thumb-related grippiness.
The front end is a 30mm wide angle lens polished by Leica, with a 4x optical zoom baked in. Other Panasonic attributes include intelligent auto mode and mega OIS to keep the shakes in check.
