The newly announced Canon EOS 60D finally pensions off the aging EOS 50D. Much has changed in the two years since the 50D arrived: the 60D not only packs a whopping 18-megapixel APS-C sensor, it also shoots 1080p high-definition video.
The 60D boasts a flip-out 76mm (3-inch) screen that spins around for shooting at all kinds of crazy angles. It features nine-point, all cross-type autofocus, four-channel colour output and in-camera raw processing.
Burst mode fires 5.3 frames per second for capturing fast-moving action, up to 58 full-resolution JPEGs. Stills and video are recorded to SD card, and SDXC card for super-high capacity storage.
1080p video is available at 30, 25 and 24 frames per second, as well as 720p video at 60 and 50fps. HDMI and an external mic jack are included. Here's a sample video provided by Canon of the video function:
The Canon EOS 60D arrives in October this year, and will be available body only for £1,100. With a 18-55mm kit lens it'll set you back £1,200. Other lens options start at £1,400.

This is a pleasant surprise, not overwhelming, but certainly pleasant. As much as I love weatherproofed bodies, this will plug a gap in the market toying between the slower 550D and the 7D.
Doesn't shoot raw video, but something tells me Canon will be leaving that until the update to their 7D or 5D MkII.

Plugs the gap between the 550D and the 7D?
It would if it didn't cost so much, how can the price be the same in pounds as it is in dollars? You can currently get a 7D body only cheaper than the 60D retail price of £1100?
It should cost between £700-£800, that would then tempt those wanting to upgrade beyond the 550D.
Looking at the current setup, you would either go for the 7D (for around the same price but better specs) or go for the 550D (for about £500 less with much the same spec). Which is it Canon - where in the market are you aiming this camera at?

Canon prices are like clockwork, they drop significantly from RRP within a fortnight of release. 7D RRP is £1,699.99, even thought it's in Jessops for £1249. I reckon within a month of release, at least a £100 will be knocked off the price.
It plugs the gap in terms of size and functionality. Size of the 550 with more fps and a useful articulating screen. The end price will sit somewhere in between.
