Nikon Coolpix S9100 offers wide angle 18x zooming Photo Gallery

Nikon Coolpix S9100 offers wide angle 18x zoomingDigital Cameras

Good things come in small packages, or so we tell the opposite sex. If only we were talking about 18x zooms, we'd be right. The Nikon Coolpix S9100 is a new compact camera with a lengthy zoom in a pocketable frame.

The S9100 packs a whopping 18x optical zoom lens. We tried the camera out at an exclusive Nikon launch event, and we were extremely impressed with such a massive zoom range, starting at a panoramic 25mm wide-angle equivalent to a 35mm camera. The S9100 isn't the slimmest snapper on the block, but it is extremely versatile for a camera that fits into the pocket. Continue reading...

Nikon Coolpix P500 and P300 advanced superzoom and compact comrades Photo Gallery

Nikon Coolpix P500 and P300 advanced superzoom and compact comradesDigital Cameras

Nikon has taken the wraps off two super-smart cameras in the P range. The Nikon Coolpix P500 superzoom and P300 compact are designed with advanced photographers in mind, the clever beggars.

The P500, pictured above, replaces the Nikon P100 advanced bridge camera at the top of the Coolpix range. The P300 is a new entry to the P series, pitched below the P500 but still aimed at the knowledgable amateur or as a back-up for the pro photographer. The P series challenges Canon's G range, but the P300 looks like an interesting rival to Canon's excellent, high-end IXUS S95, or the Panasonic Lumix LX5. Continue reading...

Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS is well good in the great outdoors

Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS is well good in the great outdoorsDigital Cameras

We're hoping WG-1 stands for 'Well Good'. It probably doesn't. Whatever the name means, the Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS is a new rugged compact camera, also available without GPS.

Pentax hasn't set out to make a rugged camera masquerading as a stylish snapper, like Crocodile Dundee in a dinner jacket. The WG-1 wears its outdoorsiness on its fleece-clad sleeve, with styling that reminded us of manly watches, right down to a compass-y, watch-y detail around the lens ring. Continue reading...

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS and SX220 HS show GPS is where it's atDigital Cameras

You can tell a quirky camera feature is hot when Canon gets involved -- and the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS and PowerShot SX220 HS prove it's a good year for cameras that know where you've been.

The SX230 HS is the first Canon compact to include built-in GPS. It collects location data from satellites and geotags your snaps with information on where they were taken. Pictures can then be displayed on maps in software such as Google Maps, Flickr and Picasa. Continue reading...

The IXUS 220 HS, pictured above, sports a wide-angle 24mm lens, equivalent to a 35mm camera. It packs a 5x optical zoom lens and 2.7-inch screen, and shoots 1080p video. It's available in silver, black and red. This sleek snapper could be yours from mid-February, for £200. Continue reading...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V and DSC-HX9V zoom lots with 3D shots

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V and DSC-HX9V zoom lots with 3D shotsDigital Cameras

We can't get enough of these fancy superzooms -- why walk over to things and look at them when you can simply zoom in from afar? Sony wants to give your tired-from-walking legs a rest, and has introduced the Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V (on the left) and DSC-HX9V (that's it on the right), which boast 30x and 16x optical zoom lenses respectively.

The HX100V is definitely the big brother of the pair -- you can tell because it has a longer name. It might have a bigger 27mm Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T lens (while the smaller HX9 makes do with a 24mm Sony G lens), but both cameras offer 1,920x1,080-pixel video capture with one-touch video recording. Both cameras have 16.2-megapixel sensors, plus GPS and a compass so you can keep track of where exactly you took each photo. Continue reading...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX77 is a stylish snapper for touchscreen types

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX77 is a stylish snapper for touchscreen typesDigital Cameras

We like cameras. They let you take photos of stuff. But some of them are big and ugly, and will make people hate you with their bulky enormousness. That's not the case with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX77, however. It's a stylish little number that will slip into your pocket or handbag, but still packs a raft of cool features.

What kind of cool features, you ask? Well how about a 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen on the back? Not enough, you say? Well what if we told you that the touchscreen is rather clever -- you can tap on the screen to focus on different objects, and the FX77 will then track your subject, making it easier than ever to keep a lock on people's faces as they duck and dive to avoid having their picture taken. Panasonic's Lumix gubbins is usually pretty darn top-notch, winning a string of CNET UK Editors' Choice awards, so two new cameras -- the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 and TZ18 -- means we're reaching for the orange bulb and changing the old excitement alert.

The Lumix TZ20 can capture 10 frames per second in glorious 14-megapixel resolution using its mechanical shutter. That burst mode should make this a compact camera well suited to sports fans, who want to capture that magical line-crossing, goal-scoring moment. Continue reading...

Samsung ST30 gets its specs from 2007, but the ST6500 is thoroughly modern

Samsung ST30 gets its specs from 2007, but the ST6500 is thoroughly modernDigital Cameras

Cast your mind back -- way, way back -- to the halcyon days and golden summer of 2007, when, er, the last Harry Potter book came out and Chris Benoit committed suicide. Samsung has certainly done that with the new ST30 budget compact camera, announced today alongside the touchscreen-packing ST6500.

The ST30, pictured above, is a bargain-basement snapper. It packs a 10-megapixel sensor and doesn't have optical image stabilisation. That doesn't sound much next to other current cameras, but 10 megapixels is more than enough for everyday use. Continue reading...

Crave has produced dozens of car tech videos over the last few years, so there's very little we don't know about using cameras in cars. Or at least that's what we thought, until we encountered the Exeros Cube G9300 -- a car camera with built-in GPS and movement sensors.

The Cube G9300 is primarily used to capture footage of your journey. It can be secured, through the medium of double-sided tape, to your dashboard where it'll record what's happening either in the cabin or the road ahead on to a microSD memory card. Continue reading...

The ten best cameras from CES Photo Gallery

The ten best cameras from CESDigital Cameras

CES 2011 saw more cameras announced than ever before. Even though cameras have their own Vegas show -- PMA in late February -- all the major manufacturers -- save for Nikon and Pentax -- refreshed their line-ups of compact and superzoom cameras.

Samsung, Fujifilm, Olympus, Casio, Canon and Panasonic each released a gajillion snappers, but fear not: Crave is here to sort the wheat from the chaff, trim the meat from the fat, and drop the crap footballer from the England squad. Reasonably fresh from CES, here are the ten cameras worth getting excited about in 2011. Continue reading...

iPhone 4 shoots latest film from Oldboy auteur Park Chan-wookMobile Phones

Oldboy director Park Chan-wook has shot his latest dark-tinged opus with the Apple iPhone 4. The phone's 720p camera was employed to shoot nightmarish short Paranmanjang for cinema release.

Paranmanjang is a half-hour film that tells the story of a middle-aged man who lands a woman's body while fishing one night, only for the pair to become entwined between life and death. The title is Korean for "ups and downs", which may refer to the events of the film -- or to the iPhone's reception. Continue reading...
