Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W180 for summer: Crave contemplates actually going outside

It's summer time, everybody! The clouds could be back at any time, but, as the sky above Crave Towers is currently a clear blue, we're going to go ahead and call it. Barbeques! Picnics! Festivals! Comedy sunstroke! Like all self-respecting geeks, Crave hates that stuff, as we burn easily and get nervous if we're away from Twitter for too long. If we do get dragged blinking and twitching into the sun, we'll need a camera that will slip easily into our baggy camo shorts -- something like the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W180 compact.

The W180 packs 10.1-megapixel resolution, seven scene selection modes, and face detection that picks out up to eight faces. This is designed to focus on and expose for your mates grouped together, pear cider in hand, in a muddy Glastonbury, and not select the gurning prat-hatted casualties milling around in the background. The 3x optical zoom lens won't get you a shot of Faith No More from the other side of Donnington Park, but could be suited to the smaller environs of the Wirral Folk On The Coast Festival.

It's another outing for the ridiculous Smile Shutter feature, which knows to wait until your scowling grimace has been transformed into a hideous rictus of fake enjoyment as you clutch a plate of E-coli-ridden meat at a barbeque. Hopefully the sun won't stop you looking at pictures of your mates falling over while playing frisbee on the 69mm (2.7-inch) LCD screen.

The W180 comes in a choice of silver, black or red. As always, Sony is saying less about price than a Craver about those ill-advised Speedos on last year's fortnight in Magaluf. Now excuse us, we have three metric tonnes of hayfever medication to buy.
