Pentax K-m: 10-megapixel dSLR with cashback

With Photokina just a day away and the big boys already in the announcement game, new cameras keep rolling in. First up today is the Pentax K-m, an entry-level 10-megapixel dSLR.

It packs a 23.5x15.7mm CCD image sensor, complete with dust removal and image stabilisation. This moves the sensor to compensate for camera shake, saving up to four shutter stops. And lo, this means you don't need stabilised lenses and so can use almost any existing Pentax glass.

The K-m is slimmer than previous Pentaxes, thanks to a repositioning of the battery compartment, which holds four AA batteries, with the grip redesigned for a comfy hold. Controls have been rethought, with a help button displaying the functions of all the controls on the screen.

Other features include auto picture mode and ten scene modes for beginners and the just plain lazy. There's a five-point autofocus system and a burst mode that Pentax claims captures 3.5 frames per second. Images are stored on SD or SDHC cards.

The K-m and 18-55mm lens have a recommended retail price of £400, while a kit including 18-55 and 50-200mm lenses will cost £500. But wait: Pentax is offering £30 cashback on both, so you'll be paying just £370 or £470.
