Photos: HD Hands-on with the Sony Cyber-shot T500

Digital Cameras

If Sony keeps turning out cameras in its T series, we're happy to keep making Terminator-related jokes at every opportunity. But we'll refrain with the new Cyber-shot T500, because we're holed up at consumer electronics enormoshow IFA, and that sort of thing is just a bit too hard at this point in proceedings.

With Photokina just around the corner, the 10.1-megapixel T500 is the only big camera announcement so far here in Berlin. Sony's stand is certainly impressive, with the highlight for this Craver being a super-giant wall with the Quantum of Solace trailer projected at bigger than cinema size. With all the product placements splashed across Casino Royale, it's only fair Sony returned the favour.

Speaking of video, the T500 join the select line-up of stills cameras that shoots high definition footage. It records up to 10 minutes of 720p video in MPEG4 H.264 codec at 30 frames per second.

Physically, it's not that different from other entries in the T series, including the recently-launched T77 and T700, with a sliding faceplate and non-protruding lens. You know how we feel about those: ambivalent, as fingers can creep into the shot.

It also packs a 5x optical zoom Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens, optical image stabilisation and face detection. UK prices are yet to confirmed, but we should see it in October. Click through the photos for more. -Rich Trenholm
