Kodak EasyShare ZD710: Hands on with zooming Doris

The Kodak Easyshare ZD710 is not the official camera of Crave's sister site ZDNet, it just has ZD in the name. The Z stands for zoom and the D stands for Doris, or something. The 7 stands for 7 megapixels, and the 10 stands for a gigantic 10x zoom.

The all-glass 10x Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon optical zoom lens is equivalent to 38–380 mm on a 35mm camera. That's not especially wide when zoomed out, but it is pretty long when zoomed in. The ZD710's not the longest zoom we've seen, but it's certainly one of the smallest. The typical superzoom shape of a chunky hand grip curving round to the right of a large lens is slimmed right down in this very compact snapper.

The ZD710 is also extremely friendly to the pockets of all you folks who like to look at things that are far, far away, like sports and minor celebrities sunbathing. It's available online for £130-£160.

We like the see-through click wheel, but we're not keen on saddling a superzoom camera with a lame zoom-rocker switch or a subpar 51mm (2-inch) screen. Other features include panorama stitch mode, allowing you to add multiple pictures together, an orientation sensor, and 'perfect touch' technology. This clears up dark shadows to add detail in darker areas.

We'll be testing these features in our forthcoming review, which you'd be able to see coming from a mile off if you had this camera.
