There's no denying the new Mac Pro is a heck of a lot of computer, hence the £2,500 price tag -- but paint it red and the price could hit £37,000.
The crimson computer goes on sale on 23 November at a charity auction in New York. The 12-core desktop looks like Darth Vader's pedal-bin, so it's fitting the one-of-a-kind red version goes on sale alongside a Stormtrooper helmet from Star Wars signed by George Lucas.
Apple design guru Jony Ive and designer Marc Newson have curated an array of scarlet-hued gewgaws to be auctioned off in aid of the (Red) charity, which funds research into diseases such as AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Lots include a customised Range Rover, solid gold Apple EarPods, and a bottle of Dom Pérignon Œnothèque 1966 fizz, with a free ice bucket thrown in, naturally.
Auctioneer Sotheby's estimates the one-off red Mac Pro will fetch between £24,600 and £37,000.
Standing just under 10 inches tall and 6.6 inches across, the new Mac Pro is housed in a tubular aluminium casing around a central heat sink, powered by up to 12 cores of Intel Xeon E5 power. It goes on sale in December.
