The Mac Mini caused something of a stir when it was first unveiled, prompting Apple-loving fanboys to mock PC users relentlessly for months on end.
Most of the Windows faction simply responded by asking, "Am I bothered?" But secretly they were very perturbed. They yearned deeply for their own PC-flavoured Mac Mini with the sort of passion that only manifests itself when a fat child sees cake.
Fortunately Evesham is set to answer PC users' secret prayers with the Mini PC. It's not hard to see where the Mini PC got its inspiration. Designed by Aopen, it shares the same dimensions as a Mac Mini but uses a laptop motherboard and processor.
The top-of-the-range model is equipped with the Pentium M 760 processor, which runs at 2.13GHz and will chomp its way through most applications with ease. Graphics are handled by the onboard adaptor supplied with the Intel 915GM chipset, so though it will play movies and presentations, it isn't particularly good at running games. The folks at Evesham say they'll also do versions of the Mini PC with a TV tuner and Wi-Fi card.
It's not hard to find the £699 Mini PC attractive, but in all honesty, it wouldn't win a beauty pageant against the Mac Mini. Still, we'd like to think it has a nicer personality than the Apple offering and would get on better with our mates. Watch out for a full review in the near future. -RR
