The world of high-performance PC components never stands still. Hot on the heels of Nvidia's four-card Quad SLI graphics setup is the latest evolution in uber-fast computer processors, the AMD Athlon 64 FX60.
Released today, the FX60 is touted as the fastest CPU money can buy. It's what you'd get if you bolted a pair of Athlon 64 FX-57 processors together, smeared them in greased lightning and left them to stew in a vat of caffeine for six weeks.
It fills a neat gap between the single-core FX-57 gaming CPU and the dual-core X2 4800+, which is designed for extreme multitasking. AMD claims the FX60 can outrun both these CPUs in their respective areas despite each of its cores being clocked a nominal 200MHz slower than the FX-57.
The FX60 uses the familiar socket 939-pin layout, so it's compatible with a wide range of existing motherboards. Predictably though, this rocket of a processor doesn't come cheap. It's around £580 on its own, but system integrators such as Evesham promise to deliver complete FX60-equipped PCs for around £2,000.
