A never-before-broadcast advert for the original Apple Macintosh has been posted on YouTube by Andy Hertzfeld, who worked on the computer.

The 1983 ad features clips from interviews with members of the original Macintosh team. It was deemed too self-congratulatory by Apple, and so was only used in its sales conference. We've got the advert after the jump, so check it out and let me know what you think. Continue reading...

An update from the manufacturers of Raspberry Pi  says that no fewer than 4,000 of the £22 devices are being made a day to meet demand. And the first official add-on, a camera module, will be available by October, according to the founder of the foundation.

"It's going incredibly well," founder Eben Upton told the BBC's Rory Cellan-Jones at the Raspberry Jam event in Cambridge. "We've had to ramp up to a point where we can build these at a rate of about 4,000 a day in order to meet demand. Even now there's still a backlog. Continue reading...

Apple-1 sells at auction for £240,000, makes iPad seem cheap

Apple-1 sells at auction for £240,000, makes iPad seem cheap Desktops

The original Apple-1 has sold at auction for a whopping $374,500 -- that's equivalent to a cool £238,269.

The computer, made in 1976 by the late Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, lacks a keyboard, monitor, keyboard, or a case, CNN reports. It's just a motherboard really. But it still works, which is pretty amazing. It makes me wonder why every iMac I've ever owned dies after about two years. Continue reading...

Asus and Acer aren't the only companies launching desktops at Computex in Taipei. As expected, ViewSonic has unveiled a 22-inch model, though sadly it doesn't turn into a tablet like some we've seen.

It does, however, run Android 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich. See, it's not all about Windows 8 at Computex. Continue reading...

Acer shows off Windows 8 desktops, tablets, and laptops Desktops

Looks like Acer is getting behind Windows 8 in a big way. It's taken to the Computex trade show in Taipei to unveil Windows 8-powered laptops, tablets and desktops, our sister CNET.com reports.

First, we have the two desktop models. The 27-inch Aspire 7600U is a touchscreen model, supporting up to 64-point simultaneous touch from all angles, meaning two people can use it at the same time. Great... or annoying, depending on who you're sharing with, like wrestling over a TV remote control. The 5600U is the 23-inch model. Both are designed to be wall-hung or used on a desk, with HD visuals and Dolby surround sound. Continue reading...

Apple's Jony Ive knighted, discusses 'quest for simplicity'

Apple's Jony Ive knighted, discusses 'quest for simplicity'Mobile Phones

Apple's design guru Jonathan Ive has received a knighthood, with the 45-year-old British designer behind the iPod, iPhone and iPad opening up about Apple's design philosophy in an interview with the Telegraph.

"We try to develop products that seem somehow inevitable," Sir Jony told the paper. "That leave you with the sense that that's the only possible solution that makes sense."

The Chingford native says Apple's products are tools, "and we don't want design to get in the way. We're trying to bring simplicity and clarity."

If you tried to describe Apple's familiar design aesthetic, 'minimalist' might be the word you'd reach for. But Sir Jony says simplicity isn't as simple as just clearing space.

Raspberry Pi gets 14MP camera add-on Desktops

The people behind the Raspberry Pi super mini computer have a camera add-on waiting in the wings. It's a monster 14-megapixel effort, although it may well be downgraded before it gets a consumer release.

That's it up there, and as you can see, it's a pretty diddy little thing, so at least it won't bulk up your Pi too much. It attaches via a ribbon cable, and is ideal for home automation applications or even advanced robotics, if you're feeling up to it. Continue reading...

Windows 8 versions and Windows RT for tablets explainedSoftware

The three main flavours Windows 8 will come in when it launches later this year have been outlined by Microsoft on its blog. The software behemoth has also confirmed it'll be called Windows 8, although I didn't realise there was ever any doubt about that.

Windows has previously come in a whole smorgasbord of varieties, with home versions, school versions and professional versions cluttering up the shelves, but Microsoft has streamlined the offerings into three distinct categories: Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT for tablets. Alienware X51 vs Xbox 360: Which should I buy?Desktops

Alienware's new game-munching mini-desktop the X51 has proven itself to be an extremely capable machine, happily chewing through the latest, most demanding games with reckless abandon in my full review. If you're a gaming fan -- and I'm assuming you are if you're reading about gaming hardware -- you probably already own a console, be it an Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3, and you're probably wondering why on Earth you might want to drop £900 on a computer. Well, let me tell you. Continue reading...
