The killer is creeping up behind his victim in the empty house. She doesn't know he's there, as she's engrossed in the book she's reading. He lurks behind the doorway of the room and there's an eery silence as he waits to attack...

And then your PC hard drive starts whirring, ruining the suspense of the moment, and making you aware that you're simply sitting in front of your computer watching a film.

Anyone who has played music, games or DVDs on their computer, or has tried to use their computer in a quiet environment, will identify with this problem. What's the point in having a fast PC to play multimedia on, if you're constantly distracted by the sound of cooling fans?

But don't give up hope -- there is a solution. CNET.co.uk's PC editor Rory Reid has put together a step-by-step guide to show you how you can eliminate almost all PC noise.
