Sunderland boffs unwrap hydrogen Nissan Almera

UK scientists have adapted a Nissan car to run on hydrogen gas. Based on a Nissan Almera, the 'HyPower' was converted by a team at the University of Sunderland and goes on show 17 September.

Team leader Dirk Kok (pictured), says "though this is a significant step forward, there is still a long way to go before we see these vehicles driving about our roads." Today you have to travel to the US or Japan to see production hydrogen cars like the Honda FCX Clarity in action. Whether UK hydrogen cars will be truly green will depend on how the hydrogen's produced.

The HyPower debut at this week's Partners4Automotive event follows recent EU backing for a Europe-wide hydrogen filling network.
