Indica EV electric car due 2009 in Europe

Car Tech

A new electric city car is zooming towards a European launch next year, thanks to a partnership announced yesterday between Norwegian and Indian firms. The four-seater Indica EV will go to war with the likes of the G-Wiz, Mega City and Smart Ed and hopes to win on better performance.

Unveiled at the SIAM Expo in India earlier this year, the Indica EV is expected to achieve 124 miles on one charge, do 0-60 in an ambling 20 seconds and feature "adequate luggage space". Unofficial reports suggest it has a charging time of eight hours.

The car's expected to go on sale in Europe next year. I'm awaiting confirmation from the UK PR to see if we'll get it here.

So far, so standard. What's really interesting is this electric car's international birth. The Indica EV is a joint project between Indian giant Tata's UK offshoot, Tata Motors European Technical Centre, and Norway's Miljų. A further Norwegian firm, Electrovaya, is providing the vehicle's lithium-ion batteries.

Miljų is in a race with another Norwegian car maker to get its electric car out first. TH!NK, which already sells its electric City four-seater in Norway, is planning to make its UK debut next year with a model that rivals the Invica EV on range and speed.
