South-west London adds 9 electric car chargers

Driving a G-Wiz across London gets easier tomorrow, thanks to a new network of charging points in the city's south-west. Nine road-side charging stations have been installed and will be available to electric car owners from 13 August 2008.

If you live in Richmond, Hammersmith & Fulham or any of the other eight boroughs listed here, you'll be able to recharge as much as you like in return for a £100 annual fee.

The new 'Eleketrobays' join the 36 central London ones already listed on the Newride website's EV charging map.

Only last month, the BBC's Panorama team reported that charging electric cars outside of London is virtually impossible, but the capital's growing charging infrastructure means it's fast becoming a mecca for EV drivers. Even my local borough of Lambeth is hoping to install four charging points in the coming months.

Add to that the tasty second generation of EVs arriving this autumn and in 2009, and electric cars are suddenly looking very attractive.
