The miniest MiniDV: Sony DCR-PC55E

Barely bigger than the cassettes it takes, the DCR-PC55E is currently the world's smallest and lightest MiniDV camcorder. Although it can't quite sucker-punch hard-disk based camcorders like the incredible JVC Everio GZ-MC200, it's at least tiny enough to conceal under the pleat of flesh on the belly of a moderately fat man.

The PC55E's 76mm hybrid LCD monitor swivels around to display video -- no great innovation -- but it's 205g weight and Carl Zeiss lens turned our heads. Although compact MiniDV cameras are beginning to struggle to match the supermodel gait of microdrive camcorders, the PC55 has definitely kept MiniDV in the game of lithe for a while yet. -CS
