Sanyo HD1010: So good they named it twice

Camcorders

Good news, everyone: Sanyo has confirmed the UK will experience the joys of its HD1010, a high-definition camcorder so good they named it twice. It packs a CMOS sensor, capturing 1080i high-definition video at up to 60 frames per second in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format. An 8GB SDHC memory card will hold just under an hour and a half of 1,920x1,080-pixel footage.

The camcorder weighs just 268g, according to Sanyo. It's a pistol-grip form factor, with a sizeable 69mm (2.7-inch) widescreen LCD monitor, boasting 230,000-pixel resolution. There's a pop-up flash for lighting your way, and a 10x optical zoom lens.

Other features include red-eye reduction, a wind filter to clean up the soundtrack, and subject-tracking face detection, which adjusts settings for up to 12 faces in the frame. This works with both video and still photos, which can be captured while the 1010 is shooting video.

You can also capture up to seven photos in one second with a burst mode for stills. Or if you want to go for some slo-mo action, there's a 300fps option for slow-motion 60fps playback.

The HD1010 charges and transfers footage via a docking station, which boasts component, composite and S-Video connections. There's also an HDMI output to connect to HD TVs, but criminally, Sanyo hasn't thrown in an HDMI cable, which must be bought separately. Shocking.

No word yet on pricing or availability, but we'll keep you posted. -Rich Trenholm
