Hard to beat: JVC GZ-MG20
Magnetic tape is about as cool as bowler hats. No one wants to have to deal with the messy world of removable tapes that wind sluggishly around rollers -- it feels like making whicker baskets, or darning socks out of rat's hair. Don't treat us like 16th-century peasants -- we're 21st-century urban socialites. The future is here though, inside the belly of the £400 GZ-MG20. While it doesn't appear that you can actually eject the hard disk from this camcorder, it offers such long record times you probably won't want to. Its big brother, the GZ-MC500, will let you swap out its drive.
So, how long will this electronic magic box stay awake to record for? Nine hours in 'normal' mode and four and a half in 'Ultra Fine'. Although image quality still lingers below the Holy Grail of MiniDV standards, portability and battery life will allure the magpie-eyed Christmas shopper. -CS
