Citizen Vain: The best looking filmmaker's camcorder
See that gorgeous black camcorder over there to the right of these words, do you have any idea how small it is? Of course you don't, where's your reference point? Why haven't we Photoshopped in a coin? Laziness? No: mystery. You have to check this thing out for yourself. It's small, scarily small. About the size of a mini-bar can of Coke and a fraction of the weight.
We got hold of this JVC Everio GZ-MC500 at the beginning of the week and took it out to shoot some footage yesterday evening. As you'd expect from a 3CCD camcorder, colour balance and low-light tolerance is excellent, and -- remarkably -- the MC500 records Dolby Digital sound and shoots in widescreen. Hang on a sec, we just have to wipe the drool off our lower lips.
Right. One of the smartest things about this camcorder is how much it looks like a really tiny Hollywood studio camera. We're not sure how intentional this was, but the side-grip resembles the film cartridges on a 35mm Panavision and the lens is barn-doored. It looks like a full-sized movie camera for Lilliputians, but it steers clear of cute and instead says "I ate Lucas for breakfast". Expect a full review soon. -CS
