We're reluctant to sully the studied minimalism of the Mac Mini, but if you absolutely must have more storage space, Macpower's M9-Mini Pod is the best looking external drive for the Mini we've seen yet. It sits underneath your Mini, mimicking its style.
Our Mini Pod arrived from Taiwan this morning, and from a distance it looks like an Apple product. However, once you get intimate with the M9, it becomes obvious that the build quality -- while good -- is a world apart from the supernatural attention to detail Apple has put into the Mini itself.
Unlike the Mini, the M9 is not encased in a seamless metal case, but spray-painted plastic does a convincing impersonation of it. Again, the rear of the M9 pays lip-service to the rear of the Mini, but it sports one or two enigmatic controls that would never have slipped past Apple's usability police.
We'll be putting a hard disk in the M9 later this afternoon to see how it fares as an external drive casing. Provided you don't let anyone pick this thing up to take a closer look, Macpower seem to have created a plausible alternative to the uglier option of buying a generic external drive for your beloved Mini. -CS
