Brace yourselves: this could be the cheesiest gadget advert of all time. It's for Samsung's smart watch, the Galaxy Gear, and it shows a snowboarder using the device to woo a girl.
But don't take my word for it. I've embedded it in this story, so you can see for yourself.
Here it is.
If you can't spare two and a half minutes, allow me to summarise. Two men and a woman are out snowboarding. One of the guys has a Galaxy Gear smart watch, the other doesn't. The one with the Gear uses it to impress the girl, while the hapless man without the watch fumbles to get his phone out of his pocket, and generally makes a bit of a numpty of himself. Gear man ends up with the girl.
It's cheesier than one of those fondues that are so popular with the aprés ski crowd.
Now I've used the Galaxy Gear, and while admittedly I didn't hit the slopes to try my luck with it, I can't say I can see it being a massive aphrodisiac. It's a good idea, being able to control your phone's main functions without taking your handset out of your pocket. But the Gear is too limited in what it can do. And the camera is terrible, frankly.
The advert is a poor show from Samsung, who is estimated to have a marketing budget of $14 billion -- that's more than Iceland's GDP. Its previous ad for the Gear -- which you can see below -- was a delightful stroll down memory lane, showing clips of smart watches from all sorts of sci-fi films and TV shows. As opposed to positioning it as something that'll help you pull.
A host of other tech companies are expected to launch smart watches soon, including Google, Apple, Intel, Microsoft, and LG. Will theirs improve on the Gear? Or are smart watches all hype? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook page.
