We fell off our chairs when the fancy-pants network-enabled Buffalo Terastation arrived at Crave, because it just seemed extraordinary to get access to such big, big storage in such a tiny, tiny package. We fell off them again this morning when we heard that Maxtor is busting out a terabyte's worth of storage with the OneTouch III external hard drive.
That's right, folks, a OneTouch terabyte -- a trillion bytes of storage love for your collection of digital movies, music and pictures. It couldn't be simpler to use: just plug it into your PC or Mac via USB or FireWire, and store all those films of pterodactyls, terraformed planets and Terry Thomas with ease.
The new Maxtor OneTouch III Turbo Edition external hard drive has a no-nonsense, Samsonite flight-case look perfect for toting your digital goodies. The new butch design also makes it easier to stack multiple drives, according to Maxtor (let's face it, one terabyte is never enough, right? I mean, our Terry Thomas DVD collection is comprehensive). The company also claims an industry first in that the drive is configurable as either Raid 0, allowing you to write data to both drives simultaneously to speed things up, or Raid 1, in which you mirror both drives to create a safe back-up of your data.
The new drive comes in 600GB (£410) or 1TB (£684) capacity and connects to either Macs or PCs via USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800. It goes on sale in December. Put Crave down for a dozen. - MP
