There are three certainties in this world: death, taxes and owning a Ford Focus hatchback. Britain's perennial bestseller has quietly been impressing critics since its 1998 debut, but even its staunchest supporters admit it's started to show its age.
Enter the 2008 model, which has a new front grille, a more muscular rear end and a more dynamic, modern aesthetic. They've even nicknamed it the 'Facelift' to help drive the message home. But is a nip here and a tuck there enough to sway the masses, or is this a case of mutton dressed as automotive lamb?
Our video review of the £18,845 Focus Titanium 1.8 TDCi has all the answers, but poses a few new questions as well. Why is the sat-nav haunted? Why is the main information display the size of a wrist watch? Why is the 1.8-litre diesel engine so keen to stall at inopportune moments?
It's worth watching, not least because you will at some point in your life, come face to face with a Focus. It doesn't matter if you buy it yourself, inherit it from your dad in 5 years' time or get run over by one on your way to buy a Jaguar XKR Portfolio -- the 2008 Ford Focus is inevitable.

Sorry about that -- we are aware of the bug with Opera and are looking into it now. In the meantime, the video should play in other popular browsers

We have fixed the problem -- videos play fine in Opera now. Enjoy!

I wouldn't even buy the Focus for that price or any Ford ever, I mean with that kind of budget I'll rather get a 2nd hand BMW or a Benz for that price at actual does the job and looks the part. Plus how much recycled material does Ford use? Every Ford that I've been in reminds me where all our recycled rubbish, hence poor quality and look.
But I do have to give prop's to their New Mondeo, great looking car but with the Ford badge on the front....its not a real chick magnet now, is it?
AnonymousSun 30 March, 2008 7:54pm
I agree the Ford Focus just looks cheap and for £18k you've got to wonder what sort of person would actually buy that car?
I'm not anti Ford and used to own a Fiesta which was pretty reliable. However the MOT's were always crazily expensive and just being 'pretty reliable' doesn't really cut it in todays market. If I'm parting ways with that much cash I want a car that looks good, performs and isn't too expensive to maintain.
VW Golf would be my choice of car at this engine size. Lovely looking things and from what I've seen of them they sure can shift!

AnonymousMon 31 March, 2008 7:55pm
Of course the engine will stall, you Brits are poor drivers who insist on driving a manual car. Get with the program and drive an automatic
AnonymousMon 31 March, 2008 10:05pm
Yeah theres loads of skill required in driving an automatic.
Idiot.

In the interest of journalistic integrity you should declare that for that class of vehicle ford had done an excellent job. Discerning motorists like us American can trust a company that can admit to a facelift. You must have ben drunk on your insipid tea. The review sucks.

This is for the annonymous A**H**E who thinks that American cars are made from recycle materials. Dude we are the leader of the free world. Our engineering capabilities has led the motor industry where it is today. Ford would never use recycle material in any of its vehicle. American car rules. Embrace the concept nut job.
AnonymousTue 1 April, 2008 9:45pm
Jason Jenkins you are a loony nut job. Is this the type of video you provide for this awesome piece of machinery? You suck at video, Rory suck at review.
AnonymousWed 2 April, 2008 11:58am
Why are Americans such inbreds?
AnonymousWed 2 April, 2008 1:15pm
Ford themselves admit to, and are proud of using recycled materials in the construction of their cars.
There is more info on the Ford website. You cool Americans shoudl check it out.
AnonymousWed 2 April, 2008 2:19pm
Of course Ford is proud to use recycle top graded materials in its cars. American leads the world in saving the planet. Going green and setting an example for the rest of the world to follow is just something we do. Its no Biggie we are just keeping it real. By the way drinking green tea does will not save the planet.

You Brits should stop whining about Americans and our cars. The car industry is where it is today because of our innovative brillance. We have done a fantastic job of keeing our place in the face review thro' downs like Rory putting out there.
Where is the respect we deserve?
AnonymousWed 2 April, 2008 2:28pm
The "Facelit" is a testament of America's greatness. ford could have gone quitely the same was as the British car industry has gone. But no Ford took a great car and remade it into a totally awesome automobile worthy of a review much greater than Rory has given it.
AnonymousWed 2 April, 2008 2:38pm
I go one better. CNET whack job bosses should advise Jason jenkins to develop a special video just for American car reviews. Think how totally fab that would be. American car review with its own special video.
AnonymousWed 2 April, 2008 3:08pm
Are you special needs? Does your carer know that you're at the computer again?
AnonymousWed 2 April, 2008 6:00pm
This is a public domain. CNET provide a service to its readers. One of the service we require is a Video that is unique to American cars. We wanna be different from the average joe smo. That way people can identify us as unique and different. We are the best at what we do, give us the props. What is unreasonale about such a request?
AnonymousWed 2 April, 2008 8:51pm
You brits are just disgruntled loosers. Always Bi***in' at us Americans. anytime we make a simple request you guy B**ch. Despite the name CNET is not exclusive to you Brits. It is reviewing American cars therefore the review should have a unique sound quality.
AnonymousWed 2 April, 2008 10:30pm
You are a joke.
Not a very funny joke but still a joke.
AnonymousThu 3 April, 2008 3:13pm
Rory, you are a good front man for CNET. Always on point with your reviews. The question I have now is why do you continue to bi**h slap American cars in your review?. Just standing by the "Facelift" makes you look so fly. Dude just hang and roll with it. Ford cars makes you look GOOD!!!
AnonymousTue 8 April, 2008 8:51pm
How long does it take for you guys to respond to our request. We've only been waiting like forever. In America our request would already have been processed.
AnonymousWed 9 April, 2008 4:13pm
Can anyone confirm whether or not stupidity is an inherited disease? and if so, can you reccommend a cure?. Am I alone in thinking that stupidity is chronic in Americans?
AnonymousWed 11 June, 2008 6:31pm
Please its not all American's are dumb...its just the ones that have too much time on their hands. Look at the status of the American car industry and tell me that they make great cars... Yes we were great and we are the pioneers of the industry...but that PRIDE has made us blind and we have fallen behind. Let's admit to it and move on to make better quality cars that people will appreciate.
