Top ten off switches

#1 - The emergency off switch
What makes this switch really impressive is its status as a last resort. When you use this bad boy, you'd better mean it or you're going to need someone with a key to come and reverse your decision.
We love this button -- its classical good looks make it a universal crowd pleaser. But it's practical too: you wouldn't want some pathetic little recessed switch when your data centre is burning to the ground because you thought it would be a good idea to fix a broken fuse with a paperclip.
Available from Dortronics the 5210-KR can take a continuous 10 amps at 120 volts. There's also an option for a plexiglass cover to prevent accidental triggering.

I will be showing this article to my girlfriend forthwith, as she has previously failed to grasp the concept of the off switch. I thankyew.

Hm. It would only take two more photos and you'd have a "swimsuit calendar"! I'd buy several!

#10 isn't a switch, it's an industrial power socket. It's even got a padlock on it to stop shady characters plugging stuff into it.

slow day at the cnet office then? that super-off switch for the underground sure is tempting though

Data's off switch is in his back.

Data's off switch is on his back. The left side I believe.
RickTue 13 November, 2007 10:23pm
Yeah, it's closer to his back; his kidneys really.

I can't believe you managed to include 2 big red emergency stop buttons, AND what actually turned out to be a power outlet, and yet you didn't include a "knife switch" - i.e. the switch that Dr. Frankenstein uses to electrify the creature. For shame!
AnonymousWed 14 November, 2007 4:30pm
I'd claim that a knife switch isn't an off switch, and, instead, is an "on" switch.

Perhaps we'll do a follow-up, Top ten on switches ;)
Thanks for all the great comments guys. And sorry about the power outlet thing, there were some red faces around the office when we got told about that :o

For the love of God, ELEVEN pages?! You gotta be kidding me!

Wow. I can't believe this is what passes for journalism in today's world. If c|net is seriously paying someone a salary to write and post this stuff, where do I apply?
AnonymousFri 21 December, 2007 1:42pm
Im amazed! Firstly that someone writes this stuff (and probably gets paid), but more amazed I looked thru all the switches and found myself interested and even laughing at some of the comments. Im current on an oil rig in the north sea. We have some nice switches. Im going to go and have a look.

Data's off switch is at the base of his spine, as other commenters have noticed.

The huge circut breaker from Jurassic Park should have been at the top of the list.. those switches were the best!

In the 1984 movie Dune, innocent young creatures are somehow fitted with a handle thing that the slimy bad guy (Baron Harkonnen) pulls from their chests just at the climax of his passionate gropings. They suddenly die in his clutches. He likes this. He's bad. This is an off switch deserving of a place here.

Was Data's off-switch on his leg? I'm not a Trek geek, but I thought I remembered an episode in which Noonien Soong or somebody said the switch was in a very special location specifically chosen to produce instinctual anxiety in humans, as a way to discourage flippant use.
My guess was few inches higher up.

The switch, IT IS GREEN!

How about the universal remote off switch. You know the one that is great for turning off the televisions at the airport or at your local TV dealer?
AnonymousSun 30 March, 2008 2:51am
Data's switch was on his lower back right side. Yes I'm a Star Trek fan :)

OMG, how could you have forgotten the BRS (Big Red Switch) of the IBM PC 5150 and up? That thing's a monster!
