Top ten nerds and geeks
Tags: man, science, named, microsoft windows
The geek shall inherit the earth, and history has proven this true. From the magnificent lightning storms of the eccentric Nikola Tesla to the time Charles Babbage cooked himself in an oven to "see what would happen", history is littered with nerds who made it big.
But who is the geekiest of them all? Is it Diogenes who lived in a barrel for most of his life, or is it John von Neumann, who was known to get arrested for reading scientific papers and driving at the same time? Will Steve Wozniak steal the top spot for inventing the Apple computer in a garage, or is Linus Torvalds the obvious winner? Crave's votes are in and counted: click through for your definitive guide to the top ten nerds and geeks. -Chris Stevens

Where are the girls? Women like Ada Byron and ... No wait - ok no girls allowed in this tree hut.

Good point, Anne. I guess girls aren't traditionally described as "geeky". Ok, give us your nominations for top female geeks and we'll start compiling a new list.

Geek girl: how about Marie Curie? Among other things, first person to get two Nobels in science. Daughter a Nobel winner too.
Kresten KjaerMon 20 November, 2006 4:36pm
Why is Bill Gates on the list ? He isn't that geeky.. And after all, Paul Allen did most of the early programming work for Microsoft. And even he isn't geeky compared to the others.
Linux is used by some of the cnet services btw, netcraft confirms it.
Why is Leonardo da Vinci not on the list ?
Also for the women, Marie Curi is an elite geek. She is a nuklear scientist.
And also the danish (female) scientist who slowed down the speed of ligt to a few centimeters per second, could be mentioned.
Best regards Kresten Kjaer.

A list of top ten female nerds must include the now late Admiral in the US Navy - Grace Hopper. She gave us the programming language Flowmatic which was the forerunner of the COBOL programming language.

I think that Theo de Raadt (OpenBSD) & Richard Stallman perhaps should be on the list.. Oh and my friend Kloeri (Gentoo developer) he makes big geeks look like cool outgoing and sociale guys..
Thomas HaugaardTue 21 November, 2006 3:25pm
You forgot Kevin Mitnick.
Kai Harrekilde-PetersenTue 21 November, 2006 8:24pm
I'd say that the late Richard Feynman would be a worthy contender. Attendees at Feynman's first seminar included Albert Einstein, Wolfgang Pauli, and John von Neumann.

You left off Seymour Cray. Without his computers that he invented the world would be a very different place. We all stand on his shoulders today.
JohnTue 5 December, 2006 5:44pm
never mind all of that lot lets get contemporary and practical - have you heard of the work of Jason Edwards in County Durham? WOW
AnonymousThu 21 December, 2006 2:39pm
needs gates moved down, torvalds moved up closer to wozniak, stallman needs to be up with tovalds, and seymour cray needs to be on the list. list is too small needs to be bigger and community decided. wins for tesla being first fails for all the other reasons!

How could you leave off Erdos? See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Erd%C5%91s for an idea of what I mean.

Several bad omissions in this list. Here are four people who all deserves the place at the top:
1) Blaise Pascal (invented the first "modern" calculator based on the decimal system)
2) Augusta Ada (the first real computer programmer, invented major concepts like loops, conditions and branching)
3) Donald Erwin Knuth (the man who systematised all fundamental algorithms in "The art of Computer Programming" book series. He invented the LALR parsing technique, i.e. the basis of all fast and efficient compilers. To typeset his own books, he went on to invent the very concepts of digital typography and literal programming, manifested as TeX & Metafont, Based on WEB (Tangle & Weave), an escalating and ongoing hack over 20 years)
4) Richard Stallman, programmer of EMACS, the real übernerd from the MIT AI Lab and godfather of GNU and the League of Programming Freedom, on which the Linux political train of thoughts comes (Linux was originally only one out of several free and open UNIX versions, and based on MINIX by Andrew Tannenbaum).

The credit for breaking Enigma does not go to Turing. The solution was handed over to him by Polish cryptographers. Check this:
